DOCTORS AT PLAY
mm MATCH AT SHIRLEY
DR. AND MBS E. J. COOKE'S HOSPITALITY
Laying aside their cares and, anxieties for the afternoon, doctors from far and near met at the Shirley golf • links yesterday to play in the annual' bogey handicap; match for the Foster Cup and to enjoy the cordial hospital-: ity of the president of the Canterbury; branch of the British Medical Association, Dr. E. J. Cooke, and Mrs. Cooke. The weather was pleasant for, golf and the course was in splendid order. The result of the match was a rude shock to those who believe that constant practice and a full range of clubs are necessary for the winning of trophies. The winner was Dr. C. E. Reid, of Darfield, who Had not played a round of golf for two years, and who was equipped with only a mid-iron, mashie niblick, and putter. But Dr. Reid, though now out of practice, was a loyr-handicap player at Balmacewan when he was a student at Otago University, and his good score of 1 up yesterday showed a remarkable return to form. Other Winners In 1927, Dr. P. Stanley Foster presented the cup for competition amongst members of the British Medical Association in Canterbury, and each year since then the match has attracted entrants for many country districts from as far north as Kaikoura. The winner the first year was Dr. F. M. Dodds, who was then on the staff of the Christchurch Hospital. In 1928 the winner was Dr. A. Bonar Lindsay, who is now in India, and the next year Drs. J. D. Marks and M. G. Louisson tied for first place. Successive winners have been Dr. J. Keith Davidson (1930), Dr. W. T. Glasgow of New Brighton (1931), Dr. J. D. Marks (1932), Dr. E. W. Hunt of Southbridge (1933), and Dr. Foster, who won the cup last year with a score of 2 down. After the match yesterday, the players, their wives, and other guests were entertained at tea in the golf house by Dr. and Mrs Cooke. The reception rooms were gay with bowls of daffodils and marigolds, and the tea table was decorated with low bowls of mixed flowers, artistically arranged. Mrs Cooke wore a smart tailored suit of navy tweed crossbarred with pearl grey, a pearl grey woollen jumper, and a navy stitched hat with a small shaded quill at the side. Before the presentation of the cup, Dr. Cooke thanked the committee of th Christchurch Golf Club for the use of the links for the match. He said that members of the medical profession were deeply indebted to Dr. Foster for presenting the cup, and the annual match was anticipated with pleasure by doctors in the city and in the country. Mrs Cooke then presented the cup to Dr. Reid. Dr. Foster, on behalf of the guests, expressed appreciation of the hospitality of Dr. and Mrs Cooke, for whom three cheers were given.
