WORK REFUSED

40 THE EDITOR or THE FHE6B,

Sir,—lt is surprising to see in "The Press" this morning that out of 200 unemployed men, who have been working for the Heathcote County Council under the No. 5 Scheme, not one was willing to accept full-time work in the country at standard rates of pay. Is there any kind of full-time work that these men would accept? Is it true that, in addition to their pay under the No. 5 Scheme, they receive assistance in the shape . of goods, and that they prefer the jtate of affairs to wontingjfull-time' at standard -rates of pay? It Would be interesting to know if it is » assist people of this kind that the Queen Carnival is being conducted.—Yours, etc WORKMAN. September 14, 1935.
