CONTROL OF TOBACCO INDUSTRY
GROWERS' MEETING AGREES TO PROPOSALS

[t "NELSON, September 17. The annual meejirig of the Nelson; Provincial Tobacco Growers* Association endorsed the principle of-the regulation of the industry by the proposed Tobacco Control Board. ■The Minister for Industries and Commerce (the Hon. R. Masters), writing about the suggested board, Mated'that it had been suggested that it would be advisable to give to-the proposed tobacco board power to take over from any grower all his unsold leaf, and to store this on his account and expense, whenever in- the opinion of the board it is in the interests of the leaf-growing industry that the leaf should be so taken over. The Minister said that he would be glad if the association would let him have, its views on this matter. These views were asked for as early as possible, so that a clause on the above lines could be included in the proposed legislation, if it met with the approval of the interested parties. It was decided' to approve of the proposal that the control board be given power to order the destruction of all excess leaf over and above the contract and below the export grades. On the motion of Messrs F. Hamilton and J. Balck it was decided that the following resolution be forwarded to the Minister for Customs (the Rt. Hon. J. G. Coates): "That this annual meeting of the Nelson Tobacco Growers' Association, having endorsed the action that the industry be regulated by a control board, desires to bring before your notice that tariff regulations must follow, and requests your early consideration of such a tariff; Such alterations to be in the interest Of furthering the use of New Zealandgrown leaf. . Under a control board, tobacco growers would be granted a license to grow tobacco and a warrant to sell it -In reply to a question, the chair-, man (Mr A. E. Fry) said that the Quantity of imported leaf used in 1934, compared with New Zealandgrown leaf, was 2,277,1641b imported, ais against 1,246,7481b New Zealandgrown, and for the first six months of 1935 1,027,1101b imported, and 565,5941b New Zealand-grown leaf was used. Golf Matches A post entry foUrball bogey match was played by the Nelson Golf Club. From a good field, Sandman and Irving won with 5 up, closely followed by Huggins and Elliott, Steamari, and Ryder, and Goodman and Rolfe, all 4 lip. In the semi-final of the captain's trophy (match play on handicap). Huggins beat Baigent, and Moulder beat Rolfe; ' ;-The finals of the championship, the leggatt Cup, and the Cock Cup will be decided on Saturday. In the Cock Gup, B. Lfee will play Brundell, and ia the Leggatt Cup, Rolfe will play Leggatt.
