' Several highways in the east coast district are blocked* by large slips after nearly three inches of rain in a little more than 24 hours on Monday. Damage in . the Masterton county area totals £2OOO, the Stronvar, Bideford, and Weber highways all being blocked by extensive slips. About two and a half chains of the Castlepoint road, beyond Timii, slipped about 50 feet down the hillside, and this road is closed indefinitely. Repairs will be a problem on account of the treacherous nature of the country. In the Wairarapa south county the East Coast road is blocked at Tyneside. In the Featherston area the Tuturumuri-Tora highway is impassable. Low-lying areas ,in south Wairarapa were under water this morning. Floods are feared at Kahutara to-night, but it will be some hours before the critical period is reached in this locality. Four roads in the south Wairarapa county's east coast area were seriously damaged. Portions of the Kaiwhata and Flat Point roads slipped into the rivers. The Glenburn road has a big slip, and on the Craigilea road two bridge approches were washed away. All four roads are impassable.

DAMAGE BY GALE

(PBSSS JiSSOClittlOH TE&S6&XM») TE AROHA, September 17. During a northerly gale yesterday additions to the Te Aroha Jockey Club's total isator house were blown to the ground, and the ' timber was smashed and splintered. The work, which was nearly completed, comprised a front addition of 60ft by 30ft of heavy timber oft a concrete foundation. The building is now being reinstated. Other buildings on the course were not affected.
