QUEEN CARNIVAL IN CRANMER SQUARE
•to nil BDITOB o» ra» pubss. Sir,—No one is more delighted than I am to see that the carnival held in Cranmer square on Friday and Saturday last brought in £IOO for those in need in our city. May I, however, request that in future if such efforts are made they take place not in a square surrounded by dwelling places. No one knew probably that someone seriously ill had not only to endure the insufferable noise of the so-called music of the merry-go-rounds and the shouting and screaming of the riders all Friday evening and all Saturday from 10 a.m. till a very late hour at night, but that the dismantling of the booths and merry-go-rounds was done amidst constant hammering and shouting until after 2.30 on Sunday morning. The suffering which this meant and the serious consequences entailed surely could have been avoided. I repeat again, I rejoice that the unemployed and their families should be helped, but could not the reserves committee safeguard the public by arranging that these noisy entertainments be held in open spaces like the park, away frcm dwelling houses?— Yours, etc., R.H. September IG, 1935.
