MOTOR-MAN COLLAPSES

TRAM STOPPED BY SAFETY DEVICE As a one-man tram from Riccarton was leaving the stop at the Christchurch Public Hospital on Sunday morning the motor-man became suddenly ill, but the automatic device which is installed in all trams to provide against such emergencies functioned immediately, and the tram came to a stop. Fortunately one of the passengers on the tram was a motor-man on the Tramway Board's staff, and he was able to take over the controls, completing the trip according to schedule. The sick man was taken into the hospital, but he made a good recovery, and was discharged yesterday afternoon. This, it is thought, is the first time in the history of the board that a tram had to be stopped by the safety device.
