JAPANESE GOODWILL MISSION
_—4 GOVERNMENT'S APPRECIATION OF WELCOME The Government's appreciation of the manner in which the members of the Japanese goodwill mission were welcomed to Christchurch is expressed in a letter which has been received by the Mayor, Mr D. G. Sullivan, M.P., from the Prime Minister, the Rt. Hon. G. W. Forbes. Much of the success of .the. mission, it is stated, was due to the co-operation of the local bodies throughout New Zealand. Mr Forbes's letter is as follows: ' "Before his departure from New Zealand, Mr Debuchi, the leader of the Japanese goodwill mission, expressed in very complimentary terms his appreciation of the spontaneous and cordial reception accorded to him and to the other members of the mission in the cities and towns he was able to visit during the limited time at his disposal. '■*'.. , ■ ' | "That the objects of the mission have been attained is apparent .not only j from the farewell message of the Ambassador, but also from statements made by the foreign spokesman of the Japanese Government, Tokyo, and the Japanese Minister for Foreign Affairs, Tokyo, which have since appeared in our press. . , . ■ "Such a successful issue is due m no small measure to the valuable cooperation and assistance of local authorities, and on behalf of the Government. I desire to express to you, as Mayor of Christchurch, appreciation of the manner in which the guests were entertained during their brief stay in Christchurch."
