Seldon, president of the Ashburton branch of the Plunket Society, left for Wellington last evening to attend the biennial conference of the Plunket Society. Miss M. Roberts, who is on a visit to Wellington, also will be a delegate from the Ashburton branch. Mr W. H. Stevens, engineer for the installation of the underground drainage scheme in the Hampstead area of the borough, has taken up his residence in Ashburton. 4 Unemployment There are 235 men registered for unemployed relief work under the No. 5 scheme at Ashburton this week, and 179 men will draw the sustenance payment. Collection for Orphanages The annual collections at the services of St Andrew's Persbyterian Church on Sunday for the Presbyterian orphanages at Christchurch totalled £72 8s Bd. Municipal Abattoir Stock slaughtered at the municipal abattoir during last month was as follows:—Cattle 150 (one condemned), calves 12, sheep 752, lambs 7, and pigs 81. Popular Assistant Contest The most popular woman assistant contest, which is being conducted by the sports section of the Labour Day Gala Committee, ha 3 attracted a good deal of interest. It is being divided into periods of one week each, and each period is complete so far as the voting is concerned. The first period closed at noon, on Saturday, when Miss M. Henderson was leading, with Miss G. Bairstow second and Miss Hogg third. The winners at the end ■ of each period will receive a prize of 10s 6d.

Golf Club's Closing Members of the Ashburton Scottish Golf Club held their closing day on Saturday, on their links, which havebeen greatly improved and extended since the opening day earlier in the year. The membership was fully represented, and there were present: Messrs J. H. Bond, J. E. Carter, J. Hawke, P. Dunn, E. A. Denham, H. C. Percy, A. Christie, E. Sawle, and F. Taylor. The weather was ideal, and an enjoyable afternoon was spent. The best cards were handed in by J. H. Bond, J. E. Carter, and P. Dunn. Bond's consistent long putting enabled him to return the score of 65 net Refreshments were provided by the committee. In the club house, the president (Mr J. H. Bond) presented the medals and trophies to the respective prize-winners. After the usual toasts had been honoured, the president entertained the members with mandoline solos. A driving competition was won by F. Taylor, most of the other competitors slicing the ball badly. Rngby Union

The management committee of the Bugby Union met last evening, when the president (Mr J. C. C. McLachlan) presided. The Ashburton Hospital Board wrote about hospital fees incurred by two Ashburton senior representatives at Melson, which had been charged to the Ashburton board. The union's attention was drawn to the advisability of an insurance scheme for footballers on tour and engaged in club matches. Many of the players were young men whose earnings were not large, and an injury might be a heavy burden either to the Individual players or their relatives Mr H. Porter said the union had an insurance scheme, but the players would not support it. It was decided to reply that as the players would not take up the union's scheme the union had no funds to insure the players against accident. „ , The North Otago Eugby Union wrote expressing sympathy with the Ashburton representative team In the motor accident with which it met on its return from Dunedin last week. A similar letter was received from the Canterbury Rugby Union.

Borough Council The fortnightly meeting of the Ashburton Borough Council was held last evening, when the Mayor (Mr W. H. Woods) presided. There were also present Crs. J. Thompson, J. Connor, E. Buchanan, J. Shaw,- S. Mitchell, J. T Pratley, H. E. C. McElrea, W. H. Robinson E. H. Orr, and R. Kerr. The financial statement showed that the receipts since last meeting totalled £431 7s' sd, the principal items being rates £2lB 4s Od, rents £42 17s, abattoir fees £49 19s 4d, licenses £lO5 8s

6d. The Medical Officer of Health for Canterbury (Dr. T. Fletcher Telford) wrote giving authority to the borough inspector (Mr J. R. Richardson) to take official milk samples at Ashburton under the Sale of Food and Drugs Act.

The Commissioner of Transport (Mr j G. C. Godfrey) wrote saying that the period for testing brakes and lights on, motor vehicles had been extended until the end of September . ' The Unemployment Board's policy In fixing allocations of relief pay was referred to in a letter from the Commissioner for Employment (Mr 3. "W. Hunter), who said that the matter had been discussed with the Mayor by the chairman and deputy-chairman of the Unemployment Board on their recent visit to Ashburton, and the position was explained. The Mayor and deputy-mayor were appointed to represent the council at a public meeting which will be called shortly to form a Health Camp Association .in Ashburton to establish a health camp for children in the district. The application of the Ashburton branch of the Women's Division of the Farmers' Union for permission to erect a tent on the East street reserve for the sale of produce on October 4 was left to the Mayor and town clerk, as application had been made by the Health Camp organisation to take up a street collection on that date.

A deputation consisting of Mesdames E. Ruddock. W. H. Amos, and A. Lane, representatives of the Ashburton Croquet Club, waited on the council with a request for extra space in the domain for the enlargement of the club's lawns. Cr. Orr reminded the council of its decision two years ago not to make any further extension of playing areas on the lower portion of the domain. Me considered that no extension was justified, and a3ked the council to give the matter very serious consideration. It was decided to meet representatives of the club at the domain on Thursday afternoon. The Ashburton Lawn Tennis Club wrote drawing the attention of the council to large trees west of its courts which were casting shadows over the courts. It was agreed to meet representatives of the club on Thursday. , A recommendation by the works committee that the council complete the second tar-sealing coating on Moore street was adopted. An application from the Allenton School Committee for permision to use water from the council's race for the proposed new swimming bath was referred to the finance committee for a report. After a discussion in committee with the engineer (Mr W. H. Stevens), it was reported that arrangements had been made to expedite the installation of the Hampstead underground road scheme. House Destroyed A four-roomed house with all its contents, owned by Mr J. E. Hardwick. farmer, Lowcliffe, was completely destroyed by fire when Mr Hardwick was away from home. The origin of the outbreak is unknown.

LAURISTON Mrs W. Gimson presided over the September meeting of the Lauriston branch of the Women's Institute. Visitors from the Ashburton centre were Mesdames F. Curtis, Andrews, and Reid. It was agreed to sell again some of the basketware made by the Jubilee Institute for the Blind, Auckland. Mrs J. A. Mackie and Miss A. Hampton were appointed delegates for the conference at Ashburton. It was decided that the branch should assist in the group competition to be held in Ashburton at the end of the present month. Mrs Andrews gave demonstrations of quilting and making paper flowers, exhibiting some fine examples of the work. Competitions resulted as follows: Butter, Miss D. Maidens 1, Miss M Letham 2, Mrs H. T. Crothers 3. Worked cushion: Miss E. Lemon 1, Misses M. Letham and M. Lemon, equal, 2, Miss E. Letham 3. Best bloom: Miss M. Letham 1, Miss E. Lemon and Mrs F. Cork, equal, 2, Miss M. Lemon 3. The hostesses were Misses M. Hampton and D. Maidens.

TE, PIRITA. Mrs Tamblin presided at the monthly meeting of the Te Pirita Women's Institute held in the schoolroom. Miss Pannett gave a report of the Dominion conference .held in Auckland. A display of paintings had been arranged by Miss Reddecliffe. Competitions resulted:—Nut loaf, Mesdames G. Inch 1, Craigie and Birdling (equal) 2; article made from a felt hat, Mesdames Birdling 1, Reddecliffe 2; best bloom, Mesdames Craigie 1, Birdling 2. The hostesses were Mesdames G. and C. Inch and Mrs McKinnon.

SEAFIELD There was a good attendance at the fortnightly euchre tournament held in the Rifle Club rooms. Mr R. Baynes controlled the games. The women's prizes were won by Mrs R. Gnce (128), Miss J. Mitchell (119), and Mrs R. Baynes (108). and the men's prizes were won by Mr A. Drummond (122). Mr J. Shelley (120), and Mr L. Scott It was arranged to play a return match against Chertsey at Pendarves on Friday evening. . After the cards a dance was held in the school.

STAVELEY The Staveley section of girl guides under Captain Nanci Norman was inspected by Commissioner K. Chamberlain, who enrolled two new guides. Norma Watson and Enid Fagan, and who also enrolled the following mothers on the committee:—Mesdames W. Norman (president), G. L. Button, G. McFarlane, A. G. Langridge, W. Gundry, E. Williams, A. Wright, L. Hicks, and N. Watson. The commissioner gave a talk on guide law and a lesson in drill. After afternoon tea, which the mothers provided, community singing was held. Church Parade The Lpyal Pioneer Lodge, M.U.. IO OF. and visiting brethren attended a church, parade at the Staveley Presbyterian Church. Mr A. C. Lion conducted the service and spoke on "Friendliness, Love, and Truth." Miss Acnes Syme sang a solo and Mrs S. T. Goldsmith was organist.
