HOUSING SCHEME FOR MAORIS

LEGISLATION THIS SESSION IFrom Our Parliamentary Reporter.] WELLINGTON, September 12. . The Government intends to bring down legislation this session providing a hous'ng scheme for the Maori people, according to a statement made by the Minister for Native Affairs (the Rt. Hon. G. W. Forbes) in the House of Representatives to-day in reply to an urgent question by Mr E. T. Tirikatene (Ind., Southern Maori). Mr Forbes referred to his previous promise to do something to help Maoris to build homes for themselves, and said that the necessary legislation was now being prepared. The members for the eastern, western, and northern Maori electorates had been urging this course for some time, and their suggestions had been considered by the Government.
