THEFT OF GOODS

YOUNG MEN ADMITTED TO PROBATION (PBBBS tSSOCIATIOH TILBBRAM:.)

AUCKLAND, September 12. Two young men employed in the warehouse of Arthur H. Nathan, Ltd., were charged with stealing goods. A third man, a partner in a suburban business, was charged with receiving. The two first were Keith Desmond Whitburn and Douglas Henry Pharo, and the third Arthur Hookway. The police said another employee of the firm noticed un order nbout to be dispatched containing more goods than listed, and informed Mr Nathan. It transpired that Whitburn was in the habit of calling on Hookway and collecting about 50 or 60 per cent, of the value of the surplus goods. He took Pharo into his confidence, giving him some of the proceeds. The value of the goods traced was £46, while £34 worth had been recovered. Both had frankly confessed. After hearing counsel's appeals, the magistrate (Mr F. K. Hunt, S.M.), admitted Pharo to probation for a year, and WhitbUrn and Hookway to probation for-two years.
