IDEAS FOR UNEMPLOYED
TO THE BDITO* 09 TKB TOSSS. Sir,— Undoubtedly the most serious aspect of this depression is the plight of the unemployed young people, who, through lack of training, are becoming adrift. But, for the moment, I am thinking of the men approaching or beyond the age of 60. Many of these unemployed have seen their hardearned savings disappear and their future seems gloomy, if not almost hopeless. Mixing with these fellow; sufferers, I find some are full of ideas but incapable of putting anything into practice, while others would be only too pleased to work but are barren of ideas.
Might I ask that you devote some portion of the "Correspondence" page for the publishing of ideas. Such ideas may suggest means either of increasing one's income or of using one's leisure in an interesting way. May I lead off with an idea? In this city of flower lovers often I have been surprised to find even people with means content to have many beautiful plants growing, not in flower pots but old tins. Now, all works on horticulture make a great point about transplant-' ing from small pots to medium and then to larger pots. Many tomatogrowers transplant from seed boxes to tin pots. But there is really nothing to surpass the earthenware flower pot. Of course, it is the high price that prevents their use. Thousands could be used if the price permitted. We have brick-earth in Christchurch. What is the reason for the high price? —Yours, etc., IDEAS. September 12, 1935.
