fy. SWEDISH APPRENTICE'S ADVENTURE BRISBANE, July 26. Karl Hjelstrom, the Swedish apprentice, who deserted from the bat que C. B. Pedersen. was brought to Thursday Island from York Island. He told how. when he had gone over the side with the captain's bathtub, he had fitted it with an outrigger, and, improvising a sail, had set out for Damley Island, which he reached after six hours. From there he was taken to York Island. Hjelstrom "ill be charged with being a prohibited immigrant. LA message received from Thursciav island on July 14 stated that Karl Hjelstrom, a 21-year old apprentice, deserted from the barque C. B. Pedersen at sea, and was bobbing cbout somewhtre in Torres Strait in an old wooden bath tub, with an improvised rail, on his w-y to New Guinea. Hjelstrom, who had heard tales of gold to be found in New Guinea, 50 miles away, took only a small supply of water, food and clothes.]
