DEPOSITS LOST
Both Mr E. L. Hills and Mr G. S. Hamilton will lose their deposits in the election, their total of votes falling far below the statutory requirement. The Electoral Act, 1927. states that every candidate, or some person on hit: behalf, shall at the time of sending to the returning, officer his consent to be nominated, deposit with or remit £lO. If the total number of votes received by any unsuccessful candidate is less than one-fourth of the total number of votes received by the succcsrful candidate, the deposit shall be forfeited and paid into the Consolidated Fund, but otherwise it shall be returned to the person who paid it. To avoid having to forfeit the deposit it was necessary to secure ,1360 (approximately) votes, this representing one-fourth of the total number polled by the successful candidate, on the first count. Mr Hills polled 103 votes and Mr Hamilton 4G. BAY OF PLENTY SEAT MR J. T. MERRY CHOSEN AS CANDIDATE (PRESS aSBO"!IATXo;,' TF.LEGHAM.) GfSBORNE, July 24. A meeting of supporters of the National Government was held at Matawai to-day to select a candidate to represent the party for the Bay of Plenty seat, Mr K. S. Williams having intimated some time ago that lie did not intend to stand because of illhealth. All areas in the widelyspread constituency were represented at the meeting, and after discussion Mr J. T. Merry, of Opotiki, was unanimously selected as the official National candidate.
