ROAD MAINTENANCE The comparative mildness of the present winter, and especially of the last few weeks, has been fortunate for the Kaikoun county. Not only has thera been an absence of major darnage to roads b ?ause ~j. big slips and wash-outs from vry heavy rain, but there has also been a lessening in the amount of the normal winter road maintenance. The majority of the council relief workers, under the No. 5 Scheme, are at present doing improvement works in and around the township, altnough 25 to 30 are working on the water supply scheme, which is a subsidised work on which the men work a five-uay week. Theft from Dance Hall An unknown thief, working in the early hours of the morning after the dance was finished, broke into the Kaikoura Drill Hall and took the supp&r dishes which had not been used. The food which had not been required at the supper had been placed to one side to be called for in the morning, but the thief, making an entry through an outhouse, removed • the collection whfch had not been required at the dance. Damage to Water Pipe No arrest has yet been made of the person responsible for the dynamiting of one of the water-pipes leading from the dam which is to give Kaikoura a permanent water supply. The pipe affected by the explosion has been replaced with a new one. The Weather After a dull day, with a fog along the coast-line on Tuesday, the weather cleared yesterday. There was a frost in the morning, and this was followed by sunshine and good weather.
