| ~ * ASHBURTON • HAMPSTEAD DRAINAGE SCHEME The roil containing the names of i ratepayers eligible to vote at the poll on the proposal to instal an underlground drainage scheme in the'Hampstead portion of the borough, closed last evening with 017 names. The proposal is to borrow £12,000 secured by a special rate of Is lid in the £ for the" installation of the system and a further £4500 secured by a special rate of Is aid for the purpose of making Joan advances to ratepayers, who require assistance to instal the drainage system. The poll of ratepayers will be taken on August 7 and a threefifths majority is required to carry the proposal. Personal Messrs H. Colquhoun (Borough), E. S. Chambers (Allenton), S. G. Macfarlane (Ashburton East), and H. H. Hawkins (Eiflelton) represented Ashburton county schools at the funeral of Miss A. C. Lloyd, who was headteacher at Willowbv School, at Kimberley yesterday. Flags were flown at half-mast, at several schools yesterday. Allenton Fire Brigade A review of the first, year's activities of the-Allenton Fire Brigade was presented to a meeting of the committee held on Tuesday evening, when Mr E. C. Bathurst (chairman) presided. The report staled that a fire brigade of nine members had been formed under Mr D. E. McDougall as captain, and practices were held fortnightly. The men were severely handicapped for want of a suitable room in which to meet when the evenings were not suitable for practical work with the team. There were 33 musters, including attendances at tires. The overage attendance of members through tire year had been 77 per cent. A permanent building to house the plant and to provide a meeting room was urgently needed. It was resolved that the Ashburton County Council should be recommended to purchase a section of land in Allen's road, and to erect: a tiro station upon it in accordance with the sketch plan submitted to the committee. Heavy Frost Eleven degrees of frost \\«.-r« : iecorded at the weather station in the Ashburton Domain yesterday morning. This is the heaviest, frost since July 14. when 11 degrees were al.v> recorded. Boxing' Association A meeting of the Ashburton Boxing Association was hold, with Mr H. D. Johnston presiding. The secretary (Mr G. V. Fur by) reported that arrangements had been made with the Timani Association to match P. Sheehan (Ashburton) with Brandt (Timaru.), V. Cobden (Ashburton) with Giles (Timani), and N. Kerr (Ashburton.' with L. Ennis (Timaru). The bouts will be held at Timaru this evening. The New Zealand Boxing Association advised that; the New Zealand championships would be held at Dunedin on October 2. and 4, instead of .September 11, 12 and 13. The Greymouth Association asked if it would suit Ihe Ashburton Association to visit Greymouth on August 10 instead of on Saturday evening, ft was decided to agree to the later dale and ask if Greymouth would receive a team or six or eight boxers. Hawkins was elected to the country selection committee. Final arrangements were made for the representative matci.es against South Canterbury at Ashburton on August 15. It was agreed to hold the annual seven-a-side tournament on September 21. Hockey The following is the draw with referees for the competitions of the Mid-Canterbury Men's Hockey SubAssociation and the Ashburlon Ladies' Hockey Association on Saturday:— Men —Wakanui v. Owing to an injury received last Saturday, S. Breach (Rakaia) is not available. Fire Fire broke out in an unoccupied three-roomed dwelling at 148 Peter street at 3.30 last evening. When the Ashburton Volunteer Fire Brigade arrived, the fire had a hold in the south-west corner of the building, but was extinguished before much darnage was done. The house is owned by Mr W. Ward, an inmate of the Jubilee Home. Addington, and was recently occupied by Mr G. Broomfieicl.
RAKAIA The; annual meeting of the South Rakaia Public Library was held, with Mr C. Shannon presiding. The bal-ance-sheet. showed a credit of £lO. The secretary reported, that four dozen new books had been added to the lib-' ra ry. The election of officer:-; resulted as follows:—Chairman and treasurer, Mr C. Shannon; secretary, Mr R.
