TIMARU AND SOUTH CANTERBURY NEWS

TIMARU NEW BUILDINGS It is anticipated that the new building which will be erected for the Bank of Australasia at the corner of Boswick and Stafford streets, will cost between £14,000 and £15,000, and will consist of three storeys in modern style. The exterior will be faced with coloured cement stucco and provision will be made for a maximum of light and ventilation. The design will comply with the Government regulations in earthquake and tire resisting materials. The chamber and other offices of the bank will be situated on the ground- floor, while on the first iloor provision will be made for 11 offices and on the second floor for eight ofiices. A modern private hospital, estimated to cost about £IO,OOO, will shortly be erected on the site of Sister McArthur's private hospital in Bidwell street. The building, which will be in brick, will consist of three storeys. } .Medals Presented The Mayor (Mr T. W. Salterlhvvaite) attended the parade of D (Support) Company, First Canterbury Regiment, under Captain G. R. Lee, and presented the King's Silver Jubilee medal to Colonel L. M. Inglis, V.D., Officer Commanding the Third New Zealand Infantry Brigade, and the Territorial Efficiency Medal to Sergeant W. Peake, who has completed 12 years' service as a territorial. He is the first territorial associated with the Canterbury Regiment to gain the medal, which is awarded throughout the British Empire. Others who attended the parade were Lieutenant-Colonel S. D. Mason, Officer Commanding the First. P,attrition Canterbury Regiment, and Captain S. M. Satterthwaite, N.Z.S.C.. Adjutant. Canterbury Regiment. Y.iM.C.A. Mr W. G. Irwin presided at. a meeting of directors of the Timaru branch of the Young Men's Christian Association. The secretary (Mr F. E. S. Long) reported that the annual street appeal would be held on September 27. The physical director (Mr D. G. Papprill) reported that the membership of the gymnasium for June was 313, the class attendances during the month totalling 1120. Twenty-live unemployed boys were receiving gymnasium privileges twice weekly.

The secretary reported that the Welfare Department of the association had found 215 positions for unemployed boys during five months. Forty-aeven of these positions were permanent one.; and 163 were temporary. One hundred and two boy;; were regisctcrd or. unemployed. Beekeepers' Association Mr L. F. Robins presided at a meeting of the South Canterbury Beekeepers' Association, when an address was given by the president of the National Beekeepers' Association '.Mr Wallace Nelson). The follow in;; motions were carried: "That this meeting oi! South Canterbury beekeepers, representing 273:1 hives of bees, expresses to the Minister tor Agriculture, the Executive Commission of Agriculture, and the local members of Parliament, our grave concern over the serious plight ot the honey industry, : n consequence of competitive individual selling by producers on the local market. Trie result is unpayable returns to producers, due to inferior unpalatable honey being retailed under misleading labels to consumers. We emphatically protest against the delay in applying the unanimous request of the industry tor legislation designed to appoint a honey marketing control board with power to stabilise returns to producers and grade honey otiercd to consumers." "That this meeting of commercial honey producers expresses its entire confidence in the Honey Export Control Board." Unemployment At an adjourned meeting to consider unemployment, attended by representatives of local organisations, and the South Canterbury Hospital Board, a proposal to call a public meeting to discuss the Question was lost. The chair was occupied by Mr P. Wild iTimaru Unemployed Workers' Union), who said that the bodies which had not seen fit to reply to the letter from the secretary about the meeting were those benefiting most from unemployed labour, which policy they were apparently prepared to continue.

The following resolutions, moved by Mr A. M. Parker, on behalf of the North End Ratepayers' Association, were carried without dissent:—(l) That representations be made to the Minister for Employment to abolish the No. 5 scheme; (2) that the Government be requested to institute a comprehensive public works scheme, thus making it possible to employ all the employable unemployed at standard rates of pay; (3) that sustenance be provided for the men remaining unemployed to ensure them reasonable living conditions, and that the Government be urged to institute a national unemployment .insurance scheme as early as possible.

ST. ANDREWS The annual meeting of the Presbyterian Women's Missionary Union was held recently at the residence of Mrs C. H. S. Johnston, "Bonnyrigg," St. Andrews. Mr L. J. I-lodson presided. The report and balance-sheet were read and adopted, showing steady progress. ' Mr Hodson gave an address o.t the object of missionary unions. Afternoon tea was served. Officers were elected as follows:—President, Mrs H. W. Hewson; vice-president, Mrs C. H. S. Johnston; secretary, Miss Iris Copland; treasurer, Mrs A. M. Copland; stamp secretary, Mrs H. W. Hewson; Maori missions, Mrs J. L. Gray; foreign missions, Mr:, It. Gray. Persona! Mrs Whitefield, Schoolhousc, Esk Valley, will return from the south this week. Miss Gladys Copland is spending a holiday at Gordon's Valley. Mrs W. E. Mills, Mrs W. Coup, and Mrs H. L. Wimsett are attending the conference of the Federation of Women's Institutes at Auckland. Mr M. Coughlan, Kingsdown, is on a visit to the North Island.

W AIM ATE The Mayor (Mr G. Dash) presided at a meeting of the Waimate Band ol! Hope. An address was Hiven by the Rev. A. M. Cos tain, and Mr Dash Rave a brief sketch of the life and work of the late Mr G. H. Graham, of Waimate. Memorial Windows Unveiled A fitting memorial to the Carter ■ family, who were so largely responsible for the erection ol' the new Knox Presbyterian Church, the three memorial glass ■ windows in the apse of the church were unveiled by the itev. Dr. J. Dickie, D.D., Moderator of the Presbyterian Church, and dedicated by hirn to the mempry of Mary Margaret, and Andrew Carter. An address was given by the Moderator. Druids' Lodge Arch l)ruid Bro. Batclielor presided at a meeting of Ivy Lodge, U.A.O.D. Sick pay amounting to £2 lfls was passed for payment. The delegate to the Friendly Societies' Dispensary Board reported on the business transacted at the last meeting of the board..

TEMUKA The first "wheelbarrow Derby" in this district was held, when Mr N. W. Mulvey, a noted amateur athlete, undertook to wheel Mr R. Reynolds from the Public Works Department's camp, near the Opihi river, to the Temuka Post Office and back in an hour. The journey was completed in 44 minute:;, Hilton School Jubilee IVli- A. E. Archibald presided at a meeting of the Hilton School Diamond Jubilee Committee. Letter;! were read from several former pupils. It was decided to ask the Temuka pipe band to be present or. the day o£ the celebrations. Arrangements for- the jubilee ball were left in tne hands of the social committee. It was reported that 300 invitations had been sent out to former pupils.
