Late last night Detective-Sergeant Walsh and three detectives executed search warrants on the residence and office of George Frederick Hewer, aged 49 years. They arrested Hewer, and to-day at the Magistrate's Court he was charged that, on July 23, he unlawfully used an instrument on a younf; woman. The police obtained a remand, and when an application was made for bail Senior-Detective Ilall strongly opposed it, emphasising the seriousness of the charge and _the fact that the young woman was in hospital. The magistrate (Mr _W. 11. McKean) refused to allow ball.
