LEVEL CROSSINGS

TO THE EDITOB or THE PRESS. Sir,—l noticed with interest that the Main Highways Board intends to spend £70,000 in eliminating level crossings in Canterbury. The board is to be commended; but what it does with one hand it proposes to undo with the other, as in the proposed deviation of the Main South ro: d two railway crossings are situated, one at Rangitata and the other near Waihi School. Apparently the board considers that a short cut is more necessary than a safe ro: d. If this road is put through, and lives are lost at these crossings, the responsibility must be on the Highways Board.—Yours, etc., INTERESTED. Geraldine, July 23, 1935.
