OLD TRAMWAY VEHICLES ARRANGEMENTS FOE TRAFFIC ft' ON SATURDAY The Mayor (Mr D. G. Sullivan, M.P.) stated yesterday that it fiad been suggested to him that Cathedral square be closed to vehicular traffic -on Saturday afternoon, when a demonstration is to be given by the tramways of the old types of vehicles. CHRISTCHURCH OP * 1885 CARNIVAL TO HE HELD ON , SATURDAY i . * The presence of horse and steamtrams, and of coaches and cabs in the city streets on Saturday afternoon will recall the Christchurch of 1885 to many of the older citizens. These will be the main attractions of a carnival which is being organised by the tramway sub-committee of the industrial group to further the candidature of their queen, Mrs A. L. Cropp. There have been many picturesque sua elaborate efforts during recent years for the relief of distress, but, with steam trams, and horse trams running, hansom cabs and a Cobb's coach (lent by the Canterbury Pilgrims' Association), plying for hire, bands playing, and nigger minstrel troupes performing, the citizens of Christchurch will be well served. Period costumes will add to the reality and festivity of the scene; the trams will be manned by men wearing side-whiskers and the other peculiarities of dress 50 years ago. Spectators should realise their fbby contributing freely to a-'fund which will eventually be used for the relief of needy families. Subscriptions to onable the orphan children to enjoy free rides in the trams and coaches will be received by the secretary, Tramway offices, Cathedral square, where all other enquiries will be dealt with. A trial run of the horse tram will ba made at the tramway workshop at 10.15 a.m. to-day. CONFECTIONERY FIRMS* BARROW RACE Representatives of confectionery firms in Christchurch will meet in a "wheelbarrow Derby 1 ' in tVe city at 4 p.m. on Tuesday next, and a collection will be nude to assist the funds of the industriej queen (Mrs A. L. Cropp) in the metropolitan queen carnival; The course will be from the Bell Cycle and Motor Company's shop in Lichfield street to the premises of Mason, Struther* and Company, Ltd., and arrangements have been made to have the courae cleared ol traffic. The following eight teams have been chose.i, the pusher being given first in e:ch Instance;— St. George Atkinson—No. 1 team: D. Stanton and G. Atkinson. No. 2 team: R. Ralph and R. O'Neill. Mackintosh, Caley, Phoenix, Ltd.— .No. 1 team; A. L. Dunn and G. Cowill. No. 2 team: R. P. Round and W. Smith. Tait, Carlisle, Simpson—W. Dean and L. Grafton. Nestles Anglo-Swiss, Ltd.—F. Smith and J. Stonehouse. Cudbury, Fry, Hudson, Ltd.—No. 1 team: J. Tryon and H. W. McElroy, No, 2 team: J. D. Tait and R. G. Fnw.
