ADDINGTON MARKET
V JHARP ADVANCE FOR BEEP Button values retained || (»t oust comnatcui. sditobJ Entries at the weekly metropolitan market yesterday were larger in the •mutton section, but substantially smaller in the beef. As a result of the limited penning of fat cattle there ■Was a sharp advance in values, averaging for good steers up to 25s a head. This represents in three weeks an improvement equivalent to about £2 10s a he. d. The market, as a matter of lact, was the best for values tor some years, and quite an amount of beef ranged round about 30s per 1001b. The main cause of the sharp advance was the limited entry, which comprised 3GO head, compared with 400 to 450 at normal markets in recent months, but there is a belief in some quarters that the market will not be over-supplied in the next month or perhaps more. Fat sheep also sold well, last week's good rates being maintained for ■wethers, whilst ewes were only a 'Shade easier. Everything in the store sheep pens wes briskly competed for, there being a firming tendency for forward wethers and hoggets. ; STORE SHEEP There was again a very small entry in the store sheep section, the total comprising only 1350 head, fairly evenly divided between the three sections of ewes, wethers, and hoggets. Included in the entry of ewes were the first with lambs for the season. Whey were only a small line of 42, with 40 lambs at foot, rnd sold at 13s Bd, all counted. Throughout there was ® Arm market for all classes, with little change in values, except for forward wethers, which were inclined to be a shade dearer. The demand indicated that there was a very brisk enquiry for all classes of store sheep, and that there is a buying capacity much in advance of the pennings coming forward. As an indication of the demand for forward wethers, a line of two and four-tooth Romney cross Snade 24s Id. The principal sales were:— Hoggets—72 Romney cross wether at 17s 9d, 26 three-quarterbred ewe at 25s 6d, 61 crossbred wether at 17s, 80 three-quarterbred wether at 17s Id, 8? at 17s 7d, 38 halfbred wether at 17s Bd, 61 at 19s 3d, 48 three-quarterbred Wether at 14s 9d, 54 at 17s. Ewes—23 three-quarterbred at 10s, 63 f. End f.m .three-quarterbred at 13s, 19 s. and f.m. halfbred at 14s 6d, 65 6. and f.m. crossbred at 15s, 20 threequarterbred at 15s 6d, 70 s. and f.m. Corriedale at 14s Bd, 126 s. and fjn. crossbred at 18s, 42 s. and f.m. halfbred at 18s 9d, 72 at 14s 7d. Wethers—so two-tooth halfbred at 22s ?d, 77 two, four, and six-tooth Komney at 22s 9d, 110 four, six, and eight-tooth halfbred at 23s fid, 89 two and four-tooth Romney cross at 24s id, 20 two-tooth halfbred at 23a 9d. , FAT LAMBS The yarding of fat lambs was naturally small and there was a consistent demand, especially for light, prime Jambs. FAT SHEEP There was a larger entry than last week, comprising 4100 head, compared With 3800. The yarding included more wethers than for some sales, South Canterbury contributing some good lines, whist there were truck lots from further south. There was a very firm eale. particularly for wethers, which maintained last week's good rates, i There was a slightly easier tendency ! for the heavier ewes, ranging from 6d to Is a head. Altogether, however, it was an excellent sale, the demand be3ng assisted by the competition of country butchers and by graziers for the lighter sorts. There were not many pens that came within graziers' limits. A pen of show wethers from J. G. Galpin (Southbridge) sold at 40s, and a pen of ewes from a client sold at 28s 7d. , Values were as under:— j! Show wethers, to 40s. f! Extra prime heavy wethers, to 32s 6d. There were very few entries from outside the province. Quality was much bettor than usual, there being a good display of prime cattle from North Canterbury and the Peninsula. The short entry was reflected In a sharp advance from the outset, and the best sale of the season was experienced All classes of prime cattle showed an advance of 20s to 25s a head, and pens that would have reached the £ll standard last week were freely making more than £l2 yesterday. The demand for all sorts of good coloured young cattle was keen, the jump in fat cattle prices being a contributing factor in this result. There was a <*ood attendance of graziers round the pens, and the buying element was brisk throughout. A good-sized pen of three-year steers of mixed colours realised £5 18s 6d, a pen of good coloured two-and-a-half-year steers £4 8s 6d, good two-year-old heifers £3, and yearling heifers to 47s 6J. Bullocks sold firmly throughout at late rates, while cows and hoifers made improved prices nt the commencement, coming back to parity values in the closing stages. Values in consequence rose., ewes appreciating Is to Is 6d on butchers' sorts. Wethers nnd lambs wore firm at late rates. Store sheep were penned in greater numbers. The quality was rather mixed; breeding ewes were lower in price, hoggets sold well at slightly improved rates, and wether 3 were steady. Tho offering included odd pens of steers, which met a keen demand, while veniers, on account of tiie short supply, found ready buyers. There was no appreciable change in prices for the assortment of boner and graziers' cows. There was a small entry of 19 dairy cows of mixed quality. Any young cows closo to profit wero* in demand, and tho top price realised in this class was £7 ss. Old and backward Borta were not required. Tn the sheep section, a medium entry of 1481 was offered, the bulk being ewes, with a few consignments of wethers and a sprinkling of hoggets. Despite the short supply of wethers, there was no appreciable change in pries, but prime heavy ewes showed nn increase in value from Is to Is 6d a head. Medium quality ewes were a shade firmer, but light and unfinished sorts \vere not in demand and were hard to quit. Hoggets sold firm at late rates. There was a large entry of 179 fat pigs of mixed quality, with only a small percentage of really prime sorts. Good baconers wero in demand and the lighter grades were readily disposed of at firm prices. The G1 store pigs forwnrd met an improved market, gorid stores selling from 14s to 18s.
