A review show 3 that many of the horses racing to-day are merely an expense to their owners, and are neither use nor ornament on the trotting track. The handicapping system has proved of great benefit to trotting, but, it is contended by many interested in the sport that weaknesses are shown, in the rules which allow concessions to horses that have been proved to be past their best. Included in the list of those granted concessions may be mentioned two New Zealand Cup winners in Wrackler and Red Shadow. The latter won the New Zealand Cup from 4mm 24sec, the Christcnurch Handicap from 4.min 23sec. and with two fast sprint races to his credit he still figures on a 4min 23sec mark for two miles. Lindbergh, another apparently hopeless proposition, has been let up one second, and the 14-year-old Jewel Pointer, now at the stud, has been granted a concession of one second on his previous mark of 4min 25sec. Ayrmorit Chimes. Vesuvius, Kingcraft, Eureka Boy. Gold 'Mngc, John Noble, and others of this calibre have been let out on their marks, and do not appear capable of doing any better for their owners. The trotters' division shows that concessions have been granted to a number of horses well past their best.
