ATTEMPT TO KEEP PUBLIC MIND OFF TROUBLES STRONG OPPOSITION FROM STAHLHELM LONDON, July 22. The Berlin correspondent of the "Manchester Guardian" says that the anti-Semitic campaign is a desperate attempt to divert public attention from economic realities. The collapse of foreign trade and the failure of Dr. Schacht's new plan to remedy it have caused widespread fears of inflation among the investing and propertied classes, and the masses are discontented with their low wages.

The Stahlhelm has strongly resisted Hitlerism, especially in respect of anti-Semitism. If the Nazis dissolve the Stahlhelm organisations throughout Germany, it will be difficult to prevent their reappearance in another form. Meanwhile, the Nazis are concentrating on the Jews. General Daleuge denounces the Jews' as criminals and declares that pickpockets are nearly all Jews, who are also the principal drug-traffickers, gaming house proprietors, and sponsors of other illegal activities.

RENEWED ATTACK ON CATHOLICS

Dr. W. Frick (Minister for the Interior) has issued a decree prohibiting Roman" Catholic youth organisations from wearing uniforms or badges, parading with flags, or performing open-air exercises. "Catholic youth organisations recently transgressed the limits set by the Government," says the decree. "The Government will no longer tolerate this practice, which endangers public order safety." Severe sentences were imposed on two Catholic priests in Berlin on July 22, for violating foreign exchange regulations. Father Utsch was sentenced to four years' imprisonment and fined £6250, and Father Wilmsen sentenced to three years' imprisonment and fined £ 1660.
