NORTH CANTERBURY
RANGIORA
PERSONAL
Mr L. B. Evans, chairman of the North Canterbury Electric Power Board, was appointed yesterday to represent the board at the annual conference of Electric Power Boards and Supply Authorities' Association of New Zealand, at Wellington, early in September. Mr A. Buckingham • (en-gineer-secretary) was granted permission to attend the annual conference of the Electrical Engineers' Association and also the secretaries' committee conference, at Wellington, at the same time.
Mr V, Corbett was presented with a pair of crystal vases by members of the John Knox Church young men's Bible clr.ss in view of his approaching marriage. Mr Corbett is leader of the class. Townships Receive Electricity Electric power was given to the Waikari township on June 22, according to a report on the reticulation work being carried out in the Waipara County, presented to members of the North Canterbury Electric Power Board at the board meeting yesterday by Mr A. Buckingham (engineer-secre-tary). It was also stated that a portion of the Hawarden township was given power on July 10, and some consumers in the Weka Pass received electricity for the first time on July o. Mr Buckingkam reported that after spending 10 days in assisting to repair the damage caused by the snowstorm, the gang returned to Amberley to erect supporting structures for eight poles on the Waipara feeder along the swamp road above Amberley. The wiring gang returned to Waikari on June 19 to complete the low tension wiring in the township. The remainder of the low tension wiring in Hawarden had now been completed, and the gang was running the branch lines and services off the main line back towards Waikari.
Strengthening of Electric Po%ver Feeder
That, the North Canterbury Electric Power Board's northern feeder from Southbrook should be considerably strengthened if a reliable and satisfactory service w_s to be maintained in the'Waipara County was emphasised by the engineer-secretary of the beard -(Mr A. Buckingham) in a report, dealing with the proposed duplication of the feeder to Waikuku, which he presented at a meeting of the board yesterday. Mr Buckingham said that the strengthening of the feeder was essential mainly because of the load now being carried in the Waipara County and of the additional load to bz expected. This feeder, which, originally ar, far as Sefton was conducted by the Public Works Department and taken over by the board in 1928, now went as far as Waikari and Hawarden. If the whole of the northern supply was given on the existing circuit it would tost the board £IBO a year for line losses. At the present time, with the flour mill at Waikari running alone, the high tension voltnre was slightly less than 10,000. He proposed to run an additional circuit from Southbrook to Waikuku, probably as far as the Ashley river crossing. Any replacements of poles, cross-arms, and insulators could, of course, be charged as replacement:?, and the cost thereby offset against the board's annual assessment for depreciation. The total cost to be met out of capital was estimated between £9OO and £IOOO. With both circuits in operation the board would s:vs £72 a ;■ ear, in line losses. The report was adopted, and it was resolved to carry out the work, the cost to be paid out of the board's original loan money of £IOO,OOO.
Extension to Eleciric Power Lines I The proposal to extend the Steffan's road electric power line in the OxfordEyre district from the present termination, across the Eyre river as far as the Harewood road, picking up five or six residents in the Oxford and Eyre Counties, was reported upon by the engineer-secretary of the North Canterbury Electric Power Board (Mr A. Buckingham) at a meeting of the board yesterday. Mr Buckingham stated that the estimated cost of the line, which would cover a distance of two end three-quarter miles, would be £362. The revenue required was £SB, and that amount had been guaranteed,- The extension was authorised. Salvation Army Rose Fair . The interior of the Salvation Army hall was transformed by the erection of a number of gaily-decorated and well-laden stalls yesterday, when a rose fair, organised by Captain and Mrg D. The maximum number of lights which could be reinstated this year was four. The board decided to receive the letter, it being contended that if the council had been prepared to increase the number of street Lights by about 10 the board might have been able to consider the proposal further. The board authorised the expenditure of £IOO in an office filing system fo>- consumers' accounts, and also £227 10s for the purchase of a light truck. it was decided to order another consignment of hardwood poles for the Omihi Valley and Mason's Flat reticulation.
