N.Z. TEAM BEATEN STRONG N.S.W. BACKS SUPERIOR TACTICS OF HOME SIDE (UKITED IBESS ASSOCIATION—COPIEIQHT.) (Received July 23, 11.55 p.m.) MELBOURNE, July 23. In. the All-Australia hockey tournament to-day New South Wales avenged its defeat in Sydney last week by beating the New Zealand team by 4 goals to 1. It was New Zealand's first match in the tournmaent. The New South Wales players showed superior tactics, particularly in the way they countered the vigorous speed of Miss M. McKenzie. The strength of the New South Wales backs gave the New Zealanu forwards no chance to display their usual strong combination. The half-time score was New South Wales 3. New Zealand 0. Miss I. Dahlberg scored for New Zealand. The New Zealand team was:— Goal—Mrs A. O'Connor. Backs—Misses W. Woolley, A. McDonald, Halves—Misses A. Mackie, M. Gudsell, M. Sanson. Forwards—Mrs H. Reid, Misses M. McKenzie, E. Saville, I. Dahlberg, M. Cotter. Victoria beat South Australia by 4 goals to 2.

ELLESMERE SUB-ASSOCIATION Tho last matches in the senior competition of tho Ellesmero Women's Hockey Sub-Association resulted in Irwell beating Doyleston by 1-0, and Dunsanuol playing a draw with Brookside, neither side being able to score. There is still ono gnmo to be played, Irwell r. Dunsandel, but as it cannot affect the reriult of the shield competition, which Irwell wins, tbi3 match will be played later on. On Saturday, on tho Southbridge ground, a Probables v. Possibles match will be played to enable the selectors to pick representative teams. Messrs G. Watkiii and Maindonald will referee the match. A full programme of fixtures has been arranged for August, including tho six-a-side tournament ut Southbridge on August 3.
