GREYMOUTH MAGISTRATE'S COURT (R2TCIAL SO THH »aE33.> GREYMOUTH, July 23. At a sitting yesterday of the Magistrate's Court, Mr H. Morgan, S.M., presided, and Senior-Sergeant E. Quayle represented the police. Twelve statutory first offenders, found on licensed premises after hours, were each fined 15s and ordered to pay costs. One second offender was fined 25s and ordered to pay costs. The magistrate said that he had recently issued a warning that he would consider increasing the fines if this class of offence did not decrease. Apparently the warning had not been taken, and in future the fines would be increased.
The licensee of the Albion Hotel, Greymouth, William Stanley Mitchell, was charged that, on June 29, he unlawfully opened the premises, exposed liquor for sale, and sold liquor. Annie Smith, barmaid, was charged with unlawfully supplying liquor. Mr J. W. Hannan. for the licensee, pleaded guilty to the charge of selling, and the others were withdrawn. He also pleaded guilty on behalf of the barmaid. The licensee was fined £5 and ordered to pay costs, and the barmaid £2, and ordered to pay costs.
Phillip Rundle pleaded guilty to a charge that, on June 26. he failed to I produce a motor-driver's license whilst driving a motor-vehicle. He was fined 10ii and ordered to pay costs. Appearing on remand, Sydney Judge aged 28 years, a miner, was charged that, on June 30, at Greymouth, he assaulted Thomas Atkin Gardyne, so as to cause him actual bodily harm. Detective-Sergeant H. E. Knight prosecuted, and accused was represented by Mr A. H. Paterson. Accused pleaded not guilty, and was committed to the next sitting of the Supreme Court for trial, on September 4. Bail was renewed in self £IOO, and one surety of £IOO. and he was ordered to repoit to the police once a week. Bowling Clnb The annual meeting of the Greymouth Bowling Club was held at the pavilion last evening, with Mr J. M. Bunt presiding. The financial statement showed a cash balance of £122 10s sd, the balance-sheet an excess of assets over liabilities of £1172 0s Bd. and the annual report a membership of 85. The report of the delegates to the West Coast Bowling Centre {Messrs J. M. Bunt and S. Peek) was adopted. The president presented the trophies won during the season. Mr John Cairney, a foundation member of the club, was elected a life member. The following officers were elected:—President, Mr A. Kibble; vice-president, Mr S. Peek; secretarytreasurer, Mr W. H. Coltman (reelected); assistant-esecretary, Mr J. Rothwell; honorary auditor, Mr J. R. Leitch; delegates to West Coast Bowling Centre. Messrs J. M. Bunt and S. Peek (re-elected); committee, Messrs J.M.Bunt,W. Meldrum, C. J. Strongman, W. Tabb, F. B. Lawn, and F. Haglund; selection committee, Messrs W. H. Coltman, J. Truscott, and W. Sharp. On the motion of Messrs Bunt and Shannon the decision reached at the last annual meeting, in favour of a new or improved pavilion, in preference to increased green accommodation, was reaffirmed, after considerable discussion. Several members advocated the securing o£ an expert's advice on the reconditioning of the green, but a motion to this effect was defeated, the matter being left in the hands of the committee. ■ Valuable Dog Dead Many dogs have died in Greymouth during the last few days, through a epidemic of pneumonic distemper, one valuable dog being Mr J. McLeod's
Tells Benedict, a two-year-old St. Bernard, and one of the few of the breed in New Zealand, Tells Benedict was whelped in Otago, by Baldwin the Great from P-' icess Betty. Baldwin the Great was imported from Australia by Mr McLeod at a cost of £IOO, but died in 1933. Broken Wrist As a result of a fall in the bush at th» rear of Palmerston street, Miss Jessie Henderson, aged about 18, received a broken wrist and facial abrasions. She was swinging on a vine, and apparently lost her grip. REEFTON INANGAHUA SILVER BAND {ijPSCIAL tQ THE PAE3S.I REEFTON, July 23. Mr J. B. Auld, president, presided at the annual meeting of the Inangahua Silver Band. The report and bal-ance-sheet showed the band to be in a sound position.- Reference was made to the deaths of Mr Jas. Williams, Reefton, and Mrs Leggoe, of Ikamatua. The election of officers resulted as follows:—Patron, Mr E. Nicolson; president, Mr J. B. Auld; vice-presidents, Mrs Stallard, Messrs W. J. Duff, C. J. Personal Mrs F. Hampson has left for Auckland, where she will attend the annual conference of the New Zealand Womens' Institute. Mrs Wicken, sen., is visiting Auckland. The Rev. W. Fairlie Evans and Mrs Evans, have returned from a visit to the south. Mr and Mrs A. Cairns (Taumarunui) are on a visit to Reefton, and are the guests of Mrs Saunders, Black's Point. Women's Institute The Reefton Women's cabaret evening was held in. the Criterion Theatre. The statue waltz was won by Mr and Mrs G. Crossman, and the lucky spot one-step by Miss E. Parsonage and Mr S. Ferris. The music for the dancing was played by the Broadway Boys' dance band, and extras by Mrs Ecklund and Mr J. Blackmore. Mr K. Archer was master of ceremonies. HOKITIKA WESTLAND RUGBY SUB-UNION (SSSCIAI. 10 THE FHESS.^ HOKITIKA, July 22. At the weekly meeting of the Westland Rugby Sub-Union, which was held this evening, Mr J. C. Stafford presided. E. Lewis was granted a transfer to the Kiwi Club from the Excel3ior Club. An invitation was received for members to attend the farewell to Mr Gilbert, at Greymouth, on Thursday evening. A letter was -received from the South Westland SubDivision stating that application was being made to the West Coast Union to have the South Westland SubDivision formed into a sub-union. The letter stated that this action was being taken to enable South Westland to challenge for the Dittman Shield. The sub-union considered that the matter should be deferred until next season. According to the rules a challenge for the shield could be accepted from the sub-division. Fixtures for Saturday were arranged as follows:—Westland team v. a Christchurch senior team, Cass square (Mr R, Collett). Junior—Ross v. School, Cass square (Mr J. Richards); Arahura v. match on Saturday, the former winning by 8 matches to 5. Kanieri Bridge Advice received by the Westland County Council that the Main Highdays Board favours the lower site for the permanent bridge on the Main South road at Kanieri has raised considerable opposition from the community at Kanieri township and a meeting has been called to discuss the matter. The new bridge will replace the one which was partly destroyed by flood early in the year, and its erection where proposed would cut. the township off from through traffic. Church Jubilee
The Hokitika Methodist Church is celebrating its jubilee. The Rev. Mr Bullet first preached hero in 1865.
