▼ , ESTIMATES OF EXPENDITUB® j PREPARED - j: The commissioners of the Ashley River Trust met last evening, wheqr there were present—Crs. C. S. Ayert (in the chair). H. J. Benjes, F. E. Mat*; tyn, P. J. Lindsay, J. Johnson, J. TuHf and L. W. Harley (secretary). X The financial statement showed tha|' there was a credit of £255 17s 7d. Receipts totalled £3OO 6s 5d and expenditure £24 7s 10d. Accounts amounting to £lO 13s 3d were passedlor payment. 5* it was aecided to send final to 10 landowners and lessees -of pro-, perties bordering Saltwater' creeks who have not cleaned their portion" oi the creek, and to notiiy the Canterbury Education Board, which was Uie lessor oi tour of the properties, that the trust could' not get the work done. It was also agreed to mention to the Kowai County Council the unsatisfactory of the creek along its road. Notices were also directed i.o be sent to a number of landowners! using Baird's creek. It was resolved to allot a portion oft the trust's reserves (15 chains by one chain) running along the embankment west of the traffic bridge on the Rangi- i ora side of the river to the schools fat* tree-planting purposes, for a period of 60 years, at a peppercorn rental of Is a year. Mr F. Langbein advised that while Mr Wood, assistant engineer-in -chief of the Public Works Department, was in the district he inspected the pro* posed site of th<? groyne to be placed between the bridges on the north bank of the river. It had been decided not to proceed with the groyne but to pudj, ahead with the construction of the stopbanks and embankments. How-' ever, the groyne would ultimately be erected. Members agreed that that particular point in the river was on* of the most dangerous from the point of view of flooding, especially to the Railway Department and the Seftoa low lands. It was decided to ask that, the erection of the groyne be pro* seeded with as soon as possible. Dealing with the estimates for tbft year, the chairman said that £ISOO would have to be paid to the Public ; Works Department when the Ashley river protection works were finished. At this time last year, the trust had a credit of £219. Directly the PubllO Works Department finished the work, the trust would ht e to maintain the river. Notice of motion was given, to be moved at the next meeting, that a rate ! cf 2-25ths of a penny in the £ on A i class land, and a rate of 6-125ths of # ! penny in the £ on B class land, be struck for the ensuing 12 months. ! It was resolved that the estimates ' be the same as last year, which amounted to the sum of £B7O. • Messrs Ayers and Harley were *p- . pointed trustees for the trust's account of £250 which it was decided to ; open at the Post Office Savings Bank. It was decided to draw the attention of the Public Works Department to : the fact that the trust's iron fencing posts in the riverbed were being taken ! up and willow posts used in the reerection of the fence. The trust eon- : sidercd that'the iron posts should fo« j used, and that a harder wood than willow should be used for the whole of the work.
