MAYOR'S RELIEF FUND
WOMEN'S AUXILIARY'S APPEAL CLOTHING FOR LITTLE CHILDREN An appeal lor funds to provide warm clothing for young children is made as follows by Miss M. G. Havelaar, chairwoman of the Women's Auxiliary of the Mayor's Relief of Distress Fund: "In the name of my committee I appeal to the citizens of Christchuich, both men and women, and to the country dwellers equally, to come to the rescue of those of our pre-school ago children who to-day are in dire rieed of warm clothes. That the need is real and very urgent we are absolutely convinced after careful enquiries. We want money and materials, and for the next six weeks many willing hands to enable us to send clothes without delay to hundreds of houses. "The children we care for particularly are from 13 months to five years old.* 1 have been asked to provide adequate clothes for hundreds of these poor mites at once. "I know only too well how more than tired we rjl are of these yearly appeals. I say we 'all' are, ifr I know that many of those for whom we appeal would more than gladly greet the day when they could supply their own wants. It has been frequently stated that in many homes the children are not urged to take care of their clothes: that is probably trile in many instances, but even if some of our "less fortunate citizens have lost some of their self-respect, my experience is, that if we knew all the circumstances and could for one week lead the life they have lived of necessity for several years now, and moreover, if we would think fairly before we criticise freely, I think we would, all of us, be only too thankful to be able to help in some small measure. "These small children for whom I appeal for help from all citizens, botii men and women, will after all take our place one day, and at present they are hindered seriously from becoming the healthy, strong men and women our country needs." All parcels of materials or clothes should be sent on Wednesdays and Fridays to 194 Oxford terrace, or on other days to Lister's Garage, 194 Oxford terrace. All correspondence should be sent to Miss Havelaar.
