BIGGER FRENCH FLEET
Decision of Naval Committee REPLY TO THE LONDON AGREEMENT (UKUEU PB.KSS ASSOCIATION* —BI ELBCTKIO " TELIr-EAPii—COPYBIGirr.) (Received June 26, 5.5 p.m.) PARIS, June 25.' The Naval Committee of the Chamber of Deputies unanimously affirmed that the Anglo-German naval agreement annulled the Versailles Treaty and, consequently, restored France's entire liberty to build warships as she thought fit. The committee invited Government action to ensure that France would always have Mediterranean and Atlantic forces sufficient to assure tfie country's security. M. Francois Pietri (Minister for Marine) said that, including vessels at present being built, the French fleet was 54 per cent, of the British, and included battleships combining the qualities of offence, defence, and mobility not achieved by any other nation. Moreover, France's improved relations with Italy permitted the transference of certain Mediterranean units to the. North Sea and English Channel fleets. The Government will immediately ask Parliament for £2,700,000 for naval construction. The programme includes a 35,000-ton battleship authorised earlier in the year.
