Shaw, assistant manager of the Union Steam Ship Company at Sydney, arrived at Wellington by the Maunganui on Monday, after a short business trip to San Francisco. Mr N T Lambourne, Director of Education, with Mrs Lambourne, left for Sydney en route to England by the Maunganui yesterday. Thev will return through the United States and Canada in February next. The Waimairi County Council at its meeting last evening expressed sympathy with Cr. C. E. Cross, member for the Wairarapa riding, in his illness, and decided to send a letter wishing him a quick recovery. Cr. E. H. Andrews (chairman of the finance committee of the Christchurch City Council) and Mr A. H. Bridge, of the council staff, left for Wellington last evening to discuss the city's town planning scheme with the Town Planning Board. Mr G. A. H. Helson, M.Sc., of Canterbury College, who lias been assistant" lecturer in zoology at the Auckland University College, has accepted a permanent position as entomologist at Canberra, commencing duties on July 15. , Mr W. G. Chapman, chairman of the Waimairi County Council, and Mr G. S. Cowper, County clerk, were appointed last evening to represent the county at the annual conference of the Counties' Association, to be held at Wellington on August 28, 29, and 30. Regret at the death of Mr J. R. Hayward and sympathy with his relatives was. expressed in a resolution passed by the Canterbury Manufacturers' Association at its meeting last evening. Mr Hayward was for . many years a strong supporter of the association and a member of its executive. Appreciative reference to the work of Mr J. S. Kelly, of the reporting staff of "The Press," who recently retired on pension, was made at the meeting of the Canterbury Manufacturers' Association last evening. It was decided to write to Mr Kelly, conveying to him the good wishes of the association, and its regret at his retirement.
Captain John Spencc, harbourmaster and chief pilot of the Wellington Harbour Board, has retired. Captain Spence will cease active work at the end of September. From October, the present deputyharbourmaster and second pilot (Captain P. S. Petersen) will take appointment as acting-harbour-master and chief pilot.—Press Association. I A motion of sympathy with the ! relatives of the late Mrs E. R. McCombs was passed at a meeting of the North Canterbury Hospital Board yesterday. The chairman, Mr H. J. Otley, referred to thehigH respect of the members of the board for Mrs McCombs during her six years' membership, saying that he regretted her loss, not only •to the Hospital Board, but to all the other bodies which she had served so faithfully for many years. Appreciation of the services to Rugby football in Canterbury of Messrs A. L. Chappell and E. Hartley Smith, chief football critics of the "Sun" and the "Christchurch Times" respectively, and of other football, reporters on the staffs of the two papers which will cease publication this week was expressed at the half-yearly meeting of the Canterbury Rugby Union last evening by the president (Dr. ,W. S. Seed) and Mr A. E. McPhail. Mr H. B. Gordon, assistant general manager of the National Bank of New Zealand, will retire at the end of this month. He entered the bank's service at the Auckland branch in 1890, and has remained in it ever since. After periods of service at Auckland, Dunedin. and Christchurch, Mr Gordon was transferred to the Wellington branch, and was afterwards attached to the head office, Wellington. Mr Gordon was born at Auckland, and was educated at the Auckland Grammar School.—Press Association. Sir Theophilus John Massie Metcalfe and Lady Metcalfe, of "Winkworth Hill," Hascombe, Godalming, England, are visitors to New Zealand. Sir Theophilus Metcalfe, who was born in 1866, is the seventh baronet of a line created. in 1802. He was educated at Eton and the Royal Agricultural College, and entering the Civil Serv'ice, served at the Andaman Islands and in British Burma. In 1925 he married Evs Vivyenne Celia Wright, daughter of Mr W. M. Wright, of Hataitai, Wellington. Mr James Robertson, who has been appointed one of the State directors of the Mortgage CorporaA lon New Zealand, was born in Auckland in 1867. Mr Robertson was educated at Auckland and alterwards was a "partner in the firm of Robertson Brothers, grain and seed merchants, of which he was chairman of directors. Later he was associated with the Gilmorc <Ju. Company, being for a time chairman of directors. Giving up business interests about five years ago, Mr Robertson went to ive on his 2000-acre farm, Tainui estate, at Hoe-o-tainui.
