When discussing modern youth during a talk in Palmerston North, Dr. Elizabeth Gunn, medical officer to the Wanganui Education Board, contended that the young girl, of to-day was the superior of the boy in virtually all respects. "The girls of to-day are better developed," said the doctor, "and the girl of 10 years is at least 40 per cent, better than a boy of the same age. The girl has less defective posture, less malnutrition, stands better, and looks better." This, she said, was probably due to girls wearing less clothing. Dr. Gunn also advocated that drill exercises for children at. school should be conducted in less clothes than were necessary for ordinary street wear. Some parents had objected to the suggestion that coats or cardigans be removed, on the grounds that their children would catch a chill, but she could not agree that the fear was warranted.
