ASHBURTON COUNTY MAILS
TO IMS BDITOIi OP Till! I'DKRfI. Sir,—ln commenting upon the snow conditions in Ashburton county you mention that the mailman did not get past Mayfield. Why not? The baker from Hinds delivered bread to farmhouses in Ruapuna, so if he could do that there was nothmg to stop the mailman. Even supposing he was afraid his car would not negotiate the Ruapuna roads, he could have come along the Rangitata road and served Carew and so on to Hinds, Has the postmaster any authority over him? Did your original contract with the mail carriers include delivering "The Press" every day it was published? Have we as boxholders any redress? — Yours, etc., CAREWITE. .June 18, 1935. [.Commenting on this letter, the Chief Postmaster (Mr F. W. Furby), said: "The contractor for the AshburtonMayfield mail service reported that ho was not able to travel beyond Mayfield on June 30, owing to the depth of snow on the roads, and the low clearance of his car. The mail car has a much smaller clearance than the baker's von. The contractor stated definitely that his car could not proceed along the Rangitata road on the CarewHinds section. The department has full authority over mail-service contractors.".!
