The boy:; were in charne of Mr L. A. Hayman, a master at the col--land were welcomed by Mr 11. E. Denton, the president of the association. who took the chair. The subject of the debate was "That polar exploration has contributed littie to riviii:;atton. and is a waste of human energy ana wealth." The lictunic:l Soldiers' team, which took the affirmative consisted of Messrs J Sev/eli, .T, Taurenson, and W. T. Woodstock. The St. Andrew's team consisted of O. G. Edwards. A. S. Blair, and J. R Woodward. Mr E. H. Marriner, who judged the contest, told ■;■ r;;'.■ ariinsin;:' anecdotes of hi.s own experiences in drbntes over a long rveiied. and Kivu much helpful criticism. He said that he had been pleased with the hi;;h qunli'v of nearly all the s-,>c''ch'"s. and complimented the St. ! Andr-.wV loam on their work. The Returned Soldiers' (earn were declared winners bv 32.'! points to 294. On the motion of the chairman, second -d bv Mr Hayman. a hearty vote of thanl:-; was passed to Mr Marriner for lit'; variable services. Community which followed was accompanied by Miss Florence Dwiijht. Songs were r,'iven by Mrs Dwitfht, musical monologues by Miss Mona Dvvit'ht. and an exhibition of conjuring by Mr W. M. Sivertsen.
