RUGBY LEAGUE

MEETING OF EXECUTIVE The weekly meeting of the executive of the Canterbury Rugby Football League was held last evening, Mr W. S. E. Moyle presiding. There were also present Messrs R. A. Drury, J. Underwood, H. Worsfold, W. Rogers, C. Hill, P. Newman, C. T. Rix, F. Rowc, E. McSweency, and Mr H. B. Rogers (honorary secretary). The New Zealand Council wrote advising that it was not in a position to give a definite answer to the league's proposal that a test match be played in Chrislchurch against the Australians this year. Nothing definite had been arranged as to the time when the Australians intended to make the visit, and until that point was decided upon it would be injudicious to make a promise which would later be impossible of fulfilment. Christchurch had been included in the itinerary submitted for the approval of the Australian Board, and it was hoped that the board would approve. In „any case, however, it could be taken as definite that the team would not be available to play two Saturdays in Christchurch.

"We note that you have made application for Lancaster Park for a date in September," continued the letter. "Press reports infer that the authorities are adamant in their refusal to allow the Canterbury League the privilege of playing on the ground. However, it is noted that your league is not allowing the matter to rest where it is, and intends to take further steps to obtain what in our opinion is your undoubted right. We would be glad to be kept advised of the position, and are willing to extend any assistance that' has for its object the making available for the use of all sporting organisations what is to all intents and purposes a public sports area." The letter further advised that the council had decided to approve the nomination of Mr C. Hal), of Greymouth, as South Island selector.

The secretary of the Canterbury Rugby Union wrote stating that the league's application for the use of Lancaster Park on one Saturday in September had been declined. The chairman said that Australian papers had stated that there was doubt about the possibility of the New South Wales team touring New Zealand, but it was certain that at least a Sydney club team would make the tour. On the motion of Mr Rowe it was decided that in the event of a Sydney club team paying a visit to New Zealand, an application be made for a fixture in Christchurch. It was decided to write to the Referees' Association asking that the games be begun at the time stated, and thai the interval be limited to 10 minutes. Junior Advisory Board Mr R. A. Drury presided at a meeting of the Junior Advisory Board. Twenty-four new registrations were approved. i Draw for Saturday The draw for Saturday is as follows: Seniors, 2.45 p.m.—Addington v. BEHAVIOUR OF

SPECTATORS

GAMES AT THE RAWIIITI DOMAIN

Encroachment on the side-line of the Rugby League ground at the Rawhiti Domain was the subject of a discussion by the executive of the league at its weekly meeting last evening.

Mr R. A. Drury stated that he had noticed in newspaper reports, and had also heard, that spectators were in the habit of encroaching on the ground. Last Saturday, in particular, he believed that the game had almost ended in a "donnybrook." He suggested that if this was the case, the clubs affected should lose their affiliation. The league was making such rapid strides, that it was not desirable that it should receive such setbacks.

Mr C. Hill, the New Brighton delegate, maintained that the attitude of the spectators had not been exceptionally unruly. The crowd might have got a little "enthusiastic." Mr H. Ei Rogers said that he had also heard that it was a shame to put teams on the New Brighton ground, when the spectators acted in such a way.

The chairman, Mr W. S. E. Moyle, stated that excitement did not give spectators any excuse for encroaching upon the ground. If the New Brighton Club could not do something, other action would have to be taken, and it was not desirable that the teams should be penalised for the spectators' behaviour.
