SAFER ROADS IN BRITAIN
BIG REDUCTION IN FATALITIES NEW HIGHWAY CODE APPROVED UIRITISII OFFICIAL WIRELESS.) (Received May 26, 7.5 p.m.) RUGBY, May 24. In the House of Commons the new highway code, which in many respects modifies in the light of recent experience that of 1931, was approved. The Minister for Transport (Mr L. Hore-Belisha) said a copy of the new code, which lays down rules fcr the conduct of all road users, including pedestrians, would be delivered free to every householder in the country. If the code was observed there would certainly be a reduction in road accidents.
The measures already taken, said Mr Hore-Belisha, had, together with the growing traffic consciousness of the community, produced very good results. During the current year there had been a considerable reduction in road accidents in spite of the phenomenal increase in the number of vehicles using the roads. In London the reduction in fatalities in the last nine weeks was no less than 30 per cent., and in injuries 35 per cent., wbi'e the n rease in the number of vehicles licensed was more than 12 per cent. The code was, he added, an effort to contribute to the public safety, and embodied suggestions made from every quarter.
