YOUTH HOSTELS
FEWER BOOKINGS ON PENINSULA PROGRESS IN WORK OF ASSOCIATION A decrease in the number of bookings at hostels is shown in the records of the Youth Hostel Association for the last 12 months, but the third annual report of the association attributes a measure of this to the extremely hot weather during summer, and looks upon the year 1934-35 as one of good progress. The number of trampers issued with Youth Hostel cards was 271, an increase on the previous year. The Banks Peninsula hostels were used by 126 trampers and the West Coast hostels by 95. Tlie report thanks hostel-owners, property-owners, and all who have assisted trampers, and reviews in detail the progress made during the year and the several alterations made to the hostel system.. It states that metal signs have been obtained to replace the old wooden ones, which have worn badly, and specially thanks Messrs S. C. Anderson and S. Meares for their work in erecting these and other signs. Several changes in the constitution of the association have been drawn up and submitted to clubs, and it is proposed that the New Zealand Council should be controlled from Christchurch. The association records als;> the arrival of numerous pamphlets and other literature from tramping clubs in other parts of the world and other districts in New Zealand. The balance-sheet shows a credit balance of £l6 9s 2d. The assets of the association are valued at £lB 9s 2d. The report and balance-sheet will bo presented to the annual meeting, to be held on Thursday, June 13.
