Dawson and Sons., Ltd., commenting on the opening of the wool sales, says the selection was. above the average. The outstanding feature was Continental buyers' special keenness for crossbred wool, though Germany bought little. i Competition was onsk, but tn>outlook is difficult to gauge. The Bradford tops market did not respond to the recent advances in the price of the raw material, yarns sulfering a spasmodic demand. FurJther rises in wool may check consumption, which is irregular at present. Worsted mills are fairly prosperous, but the woollen section oi the trade is quiet, with many machines idle. The greatest need at the moment is a rise in the price of matuuactui ed goods. HANK ADVICE The Bank of Australasia has received the following cable message from London, dated May 8: — London colonial wool sales: Merinos, fine crossbreds 10 to 15 per cent, dearer; medium crossbreds, coarse crossbreds, slipes 10 per cent, deaici above last series' closing rates. The estimated rise was 15 per cent, on the previous Adelaide market in April, and 5 per cent, on the last sales in the eastern States. GERMANY'S NEED OF WOOL AGENTS SEEKING KAKTER SYSTEM [TUB PEES 3 Special Service.] DUNEDIN, May 10. An interesting development in the wool market in New Zealand at tho present time is the arrival in New Zealand of two representatives of the German Government, who are attempting to arrange a system of barter with wool as the Dominion's contribution to the exchange. It is stated that these buyers are very anxious to secure supplies of raw material, but, at the same time, insist upon the Dominion takimi German manufactures in exchange.
