Hanrahan returned yesterday from an extended visit to Wellington. Misses C. Tanner and V. Findlay returned yesterday from Christchurch. Mayoral Installation The Mayor-elect (Mr W. Meldrurn) will be installed on Wednesday. The elected councillors usually make the statutory declaration at the installation meeting, by which time the scrut ; ny will have been completed. The scrutiny began yesterday afternoon, and the returning officer (Mr F. H. Denton) expects that it will be completed on Monday. St. John's Show The annual chrysanthemum show of the St. John's Horticultural Society was held yesterday afternoon in St. John's Hall. There were excellent entries in the principal classes, and the cut flowers were favourably commented upon by the judge. The }.-•$« >'. v was officially opened by the Rev 11. P.. Fell. The judges were;— Cut flowers and vegetables, Mr I. Mossop (Runangal; decorative, Mrs E. Warnes; knitting, Mrs Fairmaid, sen., and Mrs J. vV. Hannan; domestic,' Mr P. Blanchfield. The St. John's rose bowl, for the most points in the cut flowers section, was won by Mr F. Martini (Hokitika), and Mrs W. Harris (Waiuta) won the trophy for the champion bloom of the show. Other trophies won were:— Vegetable section, Mr G. Wilson; domestic section, Mrs O. McLean; decorative section,' Mrs G. Hear. Basketball The West Coast Basketball Association's mid-week matches resulted:— A Grade—St. Mary's A 5, beat Mayfair 4; Convent Old Girls 9, beat Technical B 3; Technical A 11, beat Blaketown 4. B Grade—Section 1: St. Mary's B 10, neat Technical C 3; Convent Old Girls' B 0, beat Technical juniors 1. B Grade—Section 2: Grey Main Old Girls 16, beat Technical D 3; Blaketown B 7, beat St. Mary's C 4. Hifle Shooting In the Grey Miniature Rifle Club's second competition for vice-president W. Hamilton's trophy, R. Simmers secured the hotty button with a score of 69. J. EfCord won the club's sealed trophy with a score of 67. The leading scores, with handicaps in parenthesis, were:—G. REEFTON, May 10. A r-lip occurred oil (he Blade's Point road, at a spot known as "The Whirlpool." A great part of the road has fallen into the Tnangahua river and is now almost closed to traffic. The county council has b>itii repairs, but it will be an extensive undertaking, limbering being required for the 20foot drop into the river. Personals Mr S. Constable, of the Post and Telegraph Office, has returned from his annual leave spent in Christchurch. Mr and Mrs T. Gahvay have left for Dunedin. where they will live. Mr K. J. Holyoakc, M.P. for Motueka, is visiting Recfton. Funeral The funeral of Mr W. E. T. Schwass was held at the Suburban cemetery, and there was a very large attendance of friends. The service at the graveside was read by the Rev. W. Bell. School of Mines Mr 1. Patterson presided at the monthly meeting of the Reefton School of Mines. The director reported that the following was the attendance at the classes held:—Blackball 11, Waiuta 11, Reefton 22. The number of assays done were:—Gold and silver 505, bullion 5, coal dust analysis 5. Mr W. S. Pratt wrote tendering his resignation as a member of the council, owing to his departure from the district. It was decided to send Mr Pratt a letler of appreciation for his assistance. The secretary submitted a statement of receipts and expenditure for the last three months, which showed the financial position as satisfactory. League Football Mr C. Coxall presided at the weekly meeting of trie Inangahua Rugby League Sub-Centre. It was resolved to approve of the nominations of Messrs A. Ainsy and F. Buckley for the West Coast executive, A letter was received from the Auckland Rugby League giving details of the insurance scheme. It was decided to circularise clubs on the matter. It was decided to approach the Reefton Women's Institute, offering to play a benefit match in aid of the rest room funds. The following fixtures were drawn up for May 12:— Seiuor —Reefton v.
