HOW BEAUTY IS GAINED

CAREFUL AND REGULAR TREATMENT

APPEARANCE AND CHARACTER

"The desire to look beautiful Is older than the desire to be either modest or comfortable," said Miss Gwen Bett in opening her talk on the Elizabeth Arden beauty treatment at Beaths' tea-rooms on Saturday morning. "And the beautiful woman is the one who has the character and intelligence to look after herself. "You cannot change your features, but you can change your skin, ihe Elizabeth Arden treatment is an intelligent method of looking after beauty, and recognises that it is linked up with health and vitality. If you have a double chin don't sit down under it. Don't neglect lines, they can be softened out and made into expression lines. A sun-tanned face is very beautiful, but it should not be half tan and half white; and the scaliness that results from being out m the sun must be watched. "Beauty has its effect on character, and on our attitude to other people. We can be much more charming to people we meet when we know we are looking our best. "Of course," said Miss Bett, "one jar of cream won't work a miracle, and it is useless to rely on rouge and powder to cover up blemishes. There must be systematic care of the skincleansing, toning, and nourishing. A few minutes can easily be spent on this by everyone, out of all the time spent eating and reading and sleeping. Methods of Treatment "Soap and water are tabu in cleansing. You may say that grandmother, who used plenty of soap and water, had a lovely skin, but that was her good fortune." Miss Bett dealt with the use of cleansing cream and the nourishment of the skin, most needed around the neck and eyes. She then demonstrated how the sagging muscles could be toned up by patting them with a specially designed patter, on which an astringent Jotion was placed. "The muscles arc kept firm by good circulation in young people," she said, "and in older people this can be stimulated by patting. The skin is tightened by the astringent lotion. The cheeks should not be patted, for it brings the delicate veins there to the surface. Patting should be done around the neck and mouth." A demostration of make-up to harmonise with brown, the favourite Christchurch colour, and with wine, which was now fashionable, were given. Using two girls as models, Miss Bett showed how the make up should be chosen and applied. "The time is past when you can order the same make-up every six months for years," she said. "It must vary according to what you wear." Miss Bett gave some incidental advice about powder puffs—not to be too affectionate towards the same one and keep it for two years, though it could be washed in petrol. She also advised following the natural line oi the eyebrows; not trying to make them turn up by plucking. She spoke of the importance of powder buses, which protected the skin from the powder. A different one was needed for different occasions. "Exercise and diet are very important," added Miss Bett in conclusion. "Do your exercises regularly—there is plenty of time —and eat vegetables and rough cereals, wjth eight to 10 glasses of water a day. Finally, philosophy has always snapped its fingers at external things, but the outside is the expression of what is within. A charming face expresses a charming personality."

The Duchess of Kent is to open a Russian art exhibition at the end of May.
