NEW ZEALANDERS' WORK IN ROYAL ACADEMY
TWO PAINTINGS HUNG
LONDON, May 2. Exhibits at the Royal Academy include Mr S. F. Goldie's painting of a drowsy Maori chief in European dress and a presentation portrait of Sir James Crichton Browne, by Mr Oswald Birley, also a New Zealancler. [The picture by Mr Goldie was regarded by critics who saw it before it v/as packed as one of the finest examples of his work. With the title "Sleep, 'tis a gentle thing," it represented Pokai, an old warrior chieftain of Ngatihauwata Hapu, of the Ngatimaru tribe, who died in 1930. The fine old Maori, with his battered European hat and. old khaki coat, his face half tattooed, and wearing a fine hei-tiki. had been caught by the artist asleep, with his head dropping and his lower lip drooping.]
