SPEEDING-UP AIR MAILS
NEGOTIATIONS ON FINANCE IN PROGRESS LONDON, April W. Sir Frederick Williamson, director of postal services, interviewed on his return from Australia, expressed gratification at the Commonwealth's adherence to the principle of the Imperial air mail scheme, which he still hopes will be operative in 1937, bringing Sydney within seven days of London. Technical negotiations are now proceeding between the British and Australian Post Office and Treasury officials. Sir Frederick hopes that agreement on the outstanding financial problems will be expedited in view of the time needed to provide the new fleet of aircraft necessary to operate high speed services. The Australian Ministers are apparently awaiting the arrival of Captain E. C. Johnston, Australian Controller of Civil Aviation, before raising the matter with Whitehall. CROYDON AERODROME TO BE•ENLARGED GREAT INCREASE IX AIR TRAFFIC (Received April 30, 7.5 p.m.) RUGBY, April 29.
Owing to the rapid and steady increase in air traffic, extensions and improvements costing many thousands of pounds are to be undertaken at Croydon. Since Croydon was equipped as a main airport seven years ago passenger and goods traffic there have increased by 300 per cent. Air lines radiate to all parts of the Empire and Europe.
