COUNTY COUNCILS

ELLESMERE The members present at the monthly meeting of the Ellesmere County Council, held at Leeston on Monday, were Cra John Heslop (chairman), A, Quigley, R. T. McMillan, A. Anderson, and J. P, McEvedy. ! At the request of the Public Works Department,. the mileage of roads in I the county is being checked up for the apportionment of heavy traffic fees. An 'invitation from the Rev. N. A. Friberg 1;o a. special thanksgiving service for the King's jubilee was accepted. The service will be held on May 12. Application was made by Mr A. E. Love to have repairs made to a road leading to the beach at Taumutu, and it was decided to have grading done. The health inspector stated that no cases of infectious disease had been reported from Ellesmere during the month. The engineer was asked to inspect and report oil a proposal to clean the county war memorial. WAIMATE The chairman, Mr H. B. S. Johnstone, presided at the monthly meeting of the 1 Waimate County Council. The finance committee reported the credit balance at the bank amounted to £3203, which made an actual credit balance of £8293 when the £SOOO-on fixed deposit was included. The credit balance at the some-time last year was £8299 12s 7d, The accounts presented for payment amounted to £8357 3s Bd, and the receipts since last meeting totalled £5694 15s lid, including the highway subsidy of £1642.8s sd, the advance rate subsidy of £1875, heavy traffic fees of £079, and Government subsidy grants of £674 <)s Bd. In the Lower Waihao water race account the credit balance at the bank was £449 3s Bd, as against a credit of £449 33s JOd-at the same period last year. ' The accounts" presented for payment amounted to £348 13.3, and the receipts since the last meeting totalled £ll 6s lOd. The request of the Waimate Borough Council asking the county council to share-£SO of the £l5O cost of improvements to the Plunket Society's rooms was considered. Fulton (Dunedin) of 5s lid a cubic yard for crushing of metal for main highway from McNamara's corner to Tawai, was accepted. The Lower Waihao water race committee reported that the supply ©£ water for the month had hardly been sufficient for all requirements. Interference with the sides of some races had taken place. The group traffic inspector reported £79 3s 3d in heavy traffic fees had been collected as a direct result rot traffic inspection. There had been 10 prosecutions for traffic breaches. The Waimate Borough Council wrote suggesting that the authorities be approached for the erection of a motor bridge over the Waimate creek at the main entrance to Knottingley Park. The engineer was asked to report. to the next meeting. One case of tuberculosis was reported in the district for the month. Mr W. F. Beck wrote about the shingling of the Hook Swamp road, and the .council' decided to lift the Government grant and proceed with the work. Mr D. E. Neave (Hakataramea) wrote agreeing to grant the council 10 feet on one side. of his property and 15 feet on the other for. improvements, on the payment of £7 to cover cost of moving fences. The offer was ac-> cepted, and it was decided to make application to the Highways Board for the usual grant.
