"All interested in the prosperity of this country should insist that the conservation of indispensable and irreplaceable forests should be assured and put on a proper basis," states the annual report of the New Zealand Forest and Bird Protection Society. "Conservation is emphatically not assured at present," the report continues. "The society has been compelled, by urgent need, to give ever-increasing energy to preserving the homes and food supplies of our native birds. Exploited for selfish ends and attacked by all manner of plant-eating animals and by fire, our protection forests must be preserved. Under present conditions, .lisaster in the form of excessive floods, universal exploitation, and uncontrollable erosion is certain to follow."
