GIPPSLAND FLOODS SUBSIDING

GREAT DAMAGE DONE ! WHOLE FAMILIES RESCUED | IN ROAT-. MELBOURNE, April 22. The Gippsland flood waters are subsiding, leaving a trail of devastation. Thousands of pounds' worth of damage to stock and property has been done to an already impoverished countryside. Bairnside and Sale remain completely isolated, and, although no casualties have occurred, the settlers had difficulty in escaping from their inundated properties. Tinamba is still isolated, with two feet of water in the main stucets. Many houses are submerged and rescue operations continued throughout Sunday night and Monday. Whole families are being taken from their homes in boats. The Premier (Mr A. A. Dunstan) announced that Cabinet would discuss immediately a programme of flood protection works to prevent a repetition.
