A Good Finish The President's Handicap provided a good finish between Bay Duke and Wall Street. The former lasted under punishment to score by a head. Bay Duke, Wall Street, and Dollar Bill made the pace to the straight, with Silk Paper handy in fourth position; but DolJar Bill stopped into seventh place. Silk Paper was fourth, and her rider, A. E. Didham, was asked to explain his handling of the mare, but no action was taken. Royal Pal got badly away and finished fast into fifth place close up. He appeared to be a good thing beaten. Piacings Reversed Picotee made all the running to the straight from Eighteen Carat in the Wakatipu Trot, and they had the finish to themselves. About 100 yards from the post Eighteen Carat "came over on Picotee, who broke, and the former won by a length, An enquiry was held into interference, the placings were reversed, and J. N. Maconnell, driver of Eighteen Carat, was suspended for two months. Sunny Southland was always prominent, but tired, and went into third place, followed by the fast-finishing Suncup. Embark and Gold Valley stopped over the last two furlongs. Decisive Victory Nightform was never further back than third in the Fiord Handicap and came through in the straight to score in a decisive manner from Red Sun, Who was with the winner all the way to the straight. Great Shot took charge at the end of a furlong from First Song, but the latter lost his position to Red Sun and Nightform at the halfmile, and then finished strongly in fourth place. Great Shot was next, and Venite was sixth. Ramo got away badly and was always well back. Grand Finale was showing the effects of his racing and gave a lifeless display. Nightform had a change of riders from the other days, and it was a factor in his success. Totolomai finished fast a neck away in third place. Won by Five Lengths Travenna , made all the running in the Fairfax Handicap, an apprentice race, and came right away in the straight to beat the favourite, Daring Deed, by five lengths. Foreign Star and Daring Deed followed Travenna to the straight, and the former was ousted from second place by a neck. Bay Biddy was last away, and soon ran up into fourth place, where he finished. With a good jump-out he would probably have been second. Travenna paid a remarkably good price in view of his easy success on the second day. One-horse Race Panocha was backed down to odds on in the Autumn Steeplechase, and he made a one-horse race of it. As on the first day, be jumped brilliantly,

but returned to tlie birdcage with a hind leg bleeding profuse-y. He probably gashed a vein. There was a good battle for second money between Black Banner and Grabali. and the former prevailed by a length. An enquiry was held into Black Banner crossing Grabjill about 30 yards of! the winning post, and it resulted in C. Carroll being suspended for a month for careless riding. Both horses were dead beat at the time, and Carroll had no chance of preventing the trouble, and would have been second in any case. It was Carroll s first ride over the .fences, and he took the mount because no steeplechase horseman was available, owing to heavy casualties in their ranks. He handled Black Banner like a veteran, and it was an unfortunate business from every point of view. The placings were not reversed. French Fleet was the only other to finish. A Big Surprise There was a big surprise in the Ohai Trot, when the backrnarker, Vologda, came from the clouds and beat one oC the pacemakers. Single Lee, in the last couple of strides. Mountain Lad and Ozanum were amongst the leading division over the last mile, and were close up. Stalwart had every chance. It was a good race. Decisive Victory Unseen, a solid favourite, attempted to win the Waipungo Handicap'all the way, but went under in the last few strides to Milford, who finished fast; from well back, and won decisively. Broken Rule also finished strongly in third place and Wondefrul got badly away and finished fourth. He was very unlucky. Acla and Epris followed Unseen into the straight, but both stopped badly. Impala and Mayam also failed to run on. Double Shot's Win Double Shot came from fourth position at the top of the straight in the Farewell Handicap, and beat the pacemaker, Cherry Queen, easily. Beam was close up third. After bein; well placed throughout, the favouritrHula Bello, was second into lh straight, but stopped in fourth place. GREYMOUTH J.C.
