ASHBURTON PERSONAL A motion of sympathy with the relatives of Mr Ainsley Moore was passed at the meeting of the Ashburton Presbytery yesterday, and it was decided to record appreciation of his services to the Presbytery. A similar motion of sympathy was passed at the meeting of the Longbeach Road Board yesterday. » Ashburttm Presbytery At the monthly meeting of the Ashburton Presbytery, held yesterday, the Rev. D. B. Ashford (moderator.! presided. The Rev. R. S. Watson, who is interim moderator of the Tinwald charge, reported that a congregational meeting had been held to discuss the rilling of the vacancy caused by the retirement of the Rev. W. Marshall, and a selection committee which had been set up would meet on Monday. It was decided to recommend to the Presbyterian General Assembly that a stipends board, similar to that in the Victorian Church, be set up to deal with financial matters. The Rev. J. Lawson Robinson and Mr W. S. Mac Gibbon (members of St. Andrew's College Board of Governors), waited on the Presbytery. Mr Robinson spoke on the aims and objects of the college. Lodge Meetings No. 1 Grand Chapter Court, Foresters' Lodge, met on Monday evening, when the G.C.R. (Bro. J. E. Meaclem) presided. No. 2 Grand Chapter advised that it would pay a visit in October. The secretary (Bro. W. H. Amos) was instructed to ascertain whether the June meeting could he held at Dunsandel. Bro. J. Templeton was elected J.B. and installed into the office in place of Bro. C. J. Bax, who has resigned. A vote of thanks was accorded Bro. Bax for his services, 't was resolved to recommend Court Ashburton to arrange a Foresters' ball. The formation of a female court was discussed, and it was decided to hold a social eevning and invite female members to attend, so that the matter may be further considered. lung's Jubilee Celebrations A detachment of B Squadron (Ashburton Mounted Rifles) will take part in the military review at Hagley Park, Chnstchurch, on May 6, to mark the King's silver jubilee. The Ashburton detachment will consist of two troops, each of 24 men and a sergeant, and will form half of the jubilee squadron which is being formed to represent the Canterbury Yeomanry Cavalry in the review. The remainder of the squadron will be made up of one troop from A Squadron (North Canterbury) and C Squadron (South Canterbury). The squadron will be commanded by Major A. J. Nicoll.

The men will proceed to Christchurch on Saturday, May 4, and will bivouac on the Show Grounds for th-j week-end, take part in the review on Monday, and return to their homes on Monday evening. The last time The Ashburton Mounted Rides paraded in Christchurch, under Captain G, A. M. Buckley, was on the occasion of the visit of the Duke and Duchess of York in 1002, and some of the men who will go to Christchurch next month arc sons of members of the original squadron. Visit of "Ralph Connor" The Rev. Charles Gordon, D.D. (better known as "Ralph Connor," the author), of Canada, accompanied by Miss Gordon, arrived at Ashburton yesterday. He was entertained at morning tea by members of the Cavendish Club immediately on his arrival. The president (Mrs E. Ruddock) welcomed him and presented Miss Gordon with a bouquet. The Mayor (Mr W. H. Woods) also extended a brief welcome. The Rev. J. Lawson Robinson and Mr W. S. MacGibbon (Christchurch), who accompanied Dr. Gordon to Ashburton, were also present at the function. Dr. Gordon spoke of his tour and referred to his work in Canada.

Violin solos were played by Dr. N. E. H. Fulton, and Miss A. Ruddock played pianoforte selections. Dr. Gordon later paid a visit to the Ashburton Presbytery, where he was welcomed by the moderator (the Rev. D. B. Ashford). He spoke of his own country and conveyed greetings from the Canadian Church. An address on "This New World" was given by Dr. Gordon to an audience of more than 400 in St. Andrew's Hall last evening, when the Rev. Ronald S. Watson presided. The Mayor, Mr W. 11. Woods, extended a civic welcome to Dr. Gordon and Miss Gordon. He said he hoped that they would have a successful tour of New Zealand. The speaker was accorded a vote of thanks. In the afternoon Dr. Gordon and Miss Gordon were taken for a drive to Peel Forest, where they inspected the church on the Mount Peel Station. They will leave for Timaru to-day. Accidents While cutting firewood, W. Hydes, of Wakanui, severely cut the thumb of his left hand. He was admitted to to the Ashburton Public Hospital, where it was found necessary to amputate a portion of the thumb. His condition yesterday was satisfatcory. A fracture of the right arm in two places,. was sustained by Alyth Buchanan, a daughter of Mr and Mrs D. Buchanan. Wills street, Ashburton, when she fell from a bicycle on Monday afternoon. She was thrown from the bicycle when it struck the concrete kerb in Park street. . Her condition is satisfactory.

Longbeach Itoad Board

The monthly meeting of the Longbeach Road Board was held yesterday, when there were present: Messrs J. P. McQuilkin (chairman), W. J. Anderson, H. Watts, and L. Maginness. The bank pass book showed a credit of £698 2s lOd.

The returning officer (Mr A. Bushell) reported that Mr J. H. Grigg had been appointed to fill the vacancy on the board caused by the death of Mr A. Moore.

The Department of Internal Affairs Y/rote there would be no more road board elections this year, as it was decided to bring all local body elections into line. The next road board election would be held in May, 1938. It was decided to give attention to roads in the Lynnford and Longbeach districts. It was decided to inspect the Flemington pound, and effect necessary repairs. l)ruids' Lodge The fortnightly meeting of the Star of Ashburton Druids' Lodge was held on Monday evening, the A.D. (Bro. R. T. Latimer) presiding. The bards reported on visits to sick members, and sick pay was passed for payment. The D.P. (Bro. A. Garriock) installed Bro. J. Ward as outside guardian. P.G.P. Bro. C. Ives reported on behalf of the social committee that the opening dance on March 30 was a great success. A ritual competition was conducted by the Royai Arch Chapter, the competition being based on the rendering of the vice-arch's charge. Bros. C. iv'js. G. V. Fur by, and A. Garriock acted as judges, and the winners were as follows:—-Sisters F. Rountree 1. Hawks 2, and Harris 3. Sister Hawke gained the highest number of points, but for being in office was penalised five points. After the competition refreshments were served. Tinwald Plunket Society The annual meeting of the Tinwald sub-branch of the Plunket Society was held on Monday afternoon, when Mrs F. W. Seldon (Ashburton) presided. There was a good attendance,

including members of the Ashburton branch. The balance-sheet showed a credit balance of £6 16s 9d.

The annual report stated that the work of the sub-branch had progressed steadily during the year, and the membership remained about the same as last year. No speical effort had been made to raise funds during the year. The nurse's report showed that 12 visits had been made to the district during the year, 163 homes having been visited, while there were 15 new cases. The health of the babies had been satisfactory. The following officers were elected: —President, Mrs T. Wilson; vice-presi-dent, Mrs A. J. Millichamp; honorary secretary, Mrs C. Jennings; treasurer, Mrs A. Hight; committee. Mesdames H. Bell. J. Clark, P. A. Cornish, J. H. Harper, A. J. Millichamp, H. B. Millichamp, S. W. Gower, G. Sewell, D. McMillan, R. Tarbotton, Miss Loy; delegates to Ashburton branch, Mesdames Wilson and Jennings. It was decided to hold a jumble sale in aid of the funds on May 4. Tennis Advice was received by the MidCanterbury Lawn Tennis Sub-Associa-tion yesterday that the Ellesmere SubAssociation was unable to fulfil the engagement for the annual match, which was set down to be played at Leeston on Saturday. The following are the final results of the Te Marae Tennis Club's competitions:—Senior men's singles championship: E. Bryant beat A. Stanley, 6-1, 6-4. Senior women's singles championship: Won by Miss E. Meredith. Junior women's singles championship: Miss F. Dunn beat Miss M. Willers, 9-6. Senior mixed doubles championship: A. Stanley and Miss E. Meredith beat L. R. Clarke and Miss I. Dahlberg, 3-6, 6-2. 6-1. Men's singles handicap: E. Bryant (owe 40) beat J. Betleridge (scr), 9-6. Men's doubles handicap: W. Watkins and D. Harwood (owe 15 3-6) beat E. Bryant and A. Stanley (owe 40). 9-8. Mixed doubles handicap: N. Moore and Miss E. Meredith beat J. Betteridge and Miss J. Smith, 9-8. Women's doubles handicap: Misses E. Meredith and N. Buchanan beat Misses F. Dunn and M. Willers, 9-8. Croquet There was a good attendance of members at the official closing for the season of the Waireka Croquet Club oi, Saturday. A progressive tournament was played, after which afternoon tea was served. The president (Mrs J. M. Wilkie) presented the following prizes for competitions:—Closing day tournament:—Senior, Mrs E. Robilliard; junior. Miss M. Galletly; senior consolation, Mrs H. Samuels; junior consolation, Mrs E. Loftus. Prizes won during the season—Trophy for Saturdays' play: Senior, Mrs E. Cross-country Hun The annual championship and handicap cross-country run of the boys of the Ashburton High School was "held yesterday afternoon, over a course of four miles. The championship is awarded to the boy securing the fastest time. Results were as follows: Senior championship—Kenward (1$ min), time 23min lOsec, 1; Gabites (scr), 23min 53sec, 2; Kelly (2mm), 24min, 3. Kenward's time is 46sec belter than Gabites' record established last year. Gabites broke his owp record by 3sec. Junior Championship—Jackson (scr), time, 25min 14sec, 1; Shaw 111. (limin), 25min 57sec, 2; Stayt (3mm), 26min 7sec, 3. Jackson's time is 16sec better than Pilbrow's record of last year. The New Zealand Council advised that the biennial conference would be held at Christchurch in November, and asked for any remits. The secretary, Mr S. M. Cassidy, reported that Fairfield, the winners of the Ashburton senior championship, would play Timaru Old Boys, the winners of the South Canterbury senior championship, at Timaru on Saturday for the Bristol Cup. It was decided to congratulate R. W. Biggar, jun., of the High School junior team, on having made more than 1000 runs during the season. Biggar made 972 in competitions, and 63 in the last representative match. The secretary said that Biggar's total had never been approached previously. He had also taken 80 wickets in bowling. It was decided that J. Dillon and H. Lennor, of Kia Ora Cluh> be graded from junior to senior. Mr R. H. Biggar, sen., said that it was fairly certain that High School Old Boys would form a club next season, and would enter senior and junior teams in the competitions. The president reported that a Southland cricket team would be on tour next season and would like to play a match at Ashburton. METHVEN The gymkhana arranged to be held on Saturday last, in aid of the funds of the Methven Golf Club, was postponed because of rain, until May 6. There was a moderate attendance on Saturday, and although the competitive events were not held, the afternoon tea booth and several side-shows did fair business.
