WOMEN'S DIVISION OF FARMERS' UNION
AMUR! BRANCH On Thursday afternoon Mrs Ward (Dominion president) visited the Amuri branch, when more than 50 people were present, including reprej sentatives of the Hanmer Springs and Hawarden branches, and several Fanners' Union members. Mrs M. Bethell presided. A motion of sympathy was passed with the relatives of Mr A. N. Anderson, members standing in silence. Mrs Bethell then introduced Mrs Ward, to whom Nancy McMillan presented a bouquet of roses. Mrs Ward gave an address on the work of the Women's Division. She stated that since its inception more than eight years ago the membership of the organisation had passed 14,000, and new branches were being formed. During last year £9OO had been taken out of the community chest fund for welfare work, apart from help rendered by branches to necessitous cases. From the house-keepers 1 scheme, the bush nurses and the sewing women, Mrs Ward went on to speak of the rest home, the book club and markets, the hand-work, and educational opportunities offered to branches, and Flock House boys. She stressed the social side of the organisation and said that making friends was not the least important of the work. She advised members to take a keen interest in the work of the League of Nations, the work of which was far-reaching. In conclusion, Mrs Ward spoke in praise of the work of the Farmers' Union. Mrs G. Hartnell moved a hearty vote of thanks to Mrs Ward. Mr J. Black also spoke on behalf of the Farmers' Union. Afternoon tea was served.
DANCE AT MELODY LANE Another of the exceedingly popular dances arranged by St. Mary's Tennis Club was held on Saturday night at Melody Lane. Music by Len. TENNIS PARTY In beautiful weather on Saturday afternoon Miss Edith Penny entertained many friends at a tennis party given at her home in May's road, in honour of Miss Noyle Baker, whose marriage will take place at Easter. At an interval between sets, tea was served on the lawn under sheltering trees. The tennis tournament, in which many closely-contested matches were playeu, was won by Miss Mae IM'- The guests, each of whom brought a copy of her favourite recipe for Miss Baker, were Mrs George Ashton, Mrs Sydney Milne, Misses Reta and Marion McCrostie, Aileen Morrison. MARSHLAND PLL'NKET COMMITTEE The monthly meeting of the committee of the Marshland branch of the Plunket Society was held on Thursday afternoon, the following being presen.'. —Mesdames Delamain (president - !, Palmer, Stackwood, K. Crozier, L. Hall. L. Wilson, L. Erickson, E. Trcleavcn, M. Blank, and O. F. Marks (secretary). The president welcomed Mrs Roberts, of RedclifYs, who is a past-president of the subbranch. The balance-sheet for catering at the recent sports meeting was presented and adopted, the credit balance being a very acceptable addition to the committee's funds. The president expressed thanks to members of the- committee, and to all who had assisted in any way on the occasion. The secretary was instructed to write to the sports* club, expressing the committee's thanks for the privilege of catering. Tiie president reported that it had been found necessary to purchase a new car for the use of the nurses in visiting the country districts, and the committee decided to send £5 as a contribution towards the cost of same. A grant of three guineas was made to Ino Karitane Hospital. Arrangements were made to hold the annual general meeting on Thursday, May S, if convenient for members from the Christchurch branch to attend on that date. Contributions were received from ■Mesdames L. Erickson, Delamain, L. Wilson, N. Treleaven, and Marks.
FAREWELL SOCIAL Many friends of Ivlr and Mrs A. Burke gathered in the Culvcrden Hall to wish .them good-bye, Mr M. Bethell, on behalf of those present, wished Mr Burke every success :in his new life, and spoke of the good work he had done while in. Culverden. He asked him to accept as a token of esteem from his friends two Morris chairs and a small table. Mr Burke replied and expressed regret at leaving the district, where he had made so many friends. FAREWELL PARTIES Mrs F. Drake and Mrs H. Bullivant were joint hostesses at a- party held at Ballantynes, in honuor of Mrs H. M. Wilkerson, who is leaving for a visit abroad. The tables were decorated with pink dahlias and roses and autumn leaves. Mrs M. Moses, wished the guest of honour "God speed," on behalf of the hostesses and Mrs Bullivant presented her with a beautiful bouquet of hothouse flowers. Those present were Mesdames W. M. Wilkerson, F. Drake, H. Bullivant, W. Hopkins, C. Bullivant, L. Crawford, J. Arnott, R. Bell, M. March, E. Farias !, N. Jarvis, A. Glec.hill, M. Moses, W. S. Langley, N. Ford, H. Lee, J. Ainger, Misses Eunice Bullivant, C. Mazey, Edna Harper, I s !. Dovcy, H. Hopkins. An enjoyable evening was spent at the home of Mr and Mrs H. Calvert, Dyer's Pass road, in honour of Mrs S. MacPherson, who will leave early next month lor a trip to England. The gathering was called a "wanted on the voyage" party, and much amusement was caused by the opening of the various parcels. Bridge and 500 were played, the winners being Mrs Armstrong and Mrs Colville. Consolation prizes were awarded to Messrs S. and N H. James. Among those present were Mesdames S. James, N. H. James, Colville, Armstrong, W. Calvert and H. Calvert, Misses Armstrong and Blythe, Messrs S. James, N. H. J'ames, K. Colville, W. Calvert, and H. Calvert.
RICHMOND KINDERGARTEN A very enjoyable coin afternoon party to augment the funds for the recent copper trail race:, was held at the home of Mrs B. C. Johanson, 10 Woodchester avenue, Shirley, where Mesdames Blick and Johanson were joint hostages. The afternoon was spent in novel games and competitions, the winners being being Mesdames E. Hitchcock, Bleasdale, Chinnery. Consolation prizes were won by Mesdames Peverill, Geary, and Dixon. Afternoon tea was served. Those present included Mesdames E. Hitchcock, A. Peveril], A. E. ALEXANDRA HALL POPULAR OLD-TIME DANCE The ballroom of the Alexandra Hall was again crowded on Saturday evening, when the popular weekly old-time dance was held. In keeping with the occasion, which was a streamer-balloon carnival, festoons of coloured balloons and streamers covered the ceiling and decorated a beautiful "arch of welcome" over the stage. Mr Jackson and his band supplied good time music, which made easy the old-time dancing. Mr Jim Hamilton, on the piano accordion, played for a community sing waltz of old-time tunes, and the dancers joined heartily in the singing. An extra Highland schottische and Boston two-step were given on the bagpipes. The other attractions included a lucky number and Monte Carlo. Among those present were a number of petty officers and men from H.M.A.S. Canberra, who favour old-time dancing. The Assembly will hold an old-time dance this evening and also on Wednesday next at the Alexandra Hall.
