♦ SIMES CUP AT HANMER WIN FOR AVONDALE I'AIR Conditions were ideal for golf during the week-end. The weather was at its best, warm enough, and with just the right amount of wind to make the 1 game interesting without being unpleasant. Courses had lost some of their fire after the rains of the week. Chief interest centred in the annual tournament at Hatvmer, where the Simes Memorial Cup and the Bascand Cup were played. These were very entries for the tournament, arid the city clubs were represented, most of them by strong players. The Simes Cup was won by an Avondale pair, T. Easterbrook and Miss Todd, with a net 137 for the three rounds of 13 holes. Their handicap was 44. The Bascand Cup went to a Hanmcr pair, D. M. Lewis and Miss E. Farsons. C. J. Ward and Miss Stevenson, of Shirley, were next. At Shirley, the first round of the Borthwick Vase was played, three of the four games being completed. Stroke handicaps were played on Saturday at Hagley. The senior event went to P. G. Greenwood with a net 64. In the junior division there was a tie between F. J. Needham and E. A. Summers with net cards of 63, five strokes ahead of their nearest opponent. J. S. Wilson won the senior division of the stroke handicap played at Harewood. The junior event went to R. Twyneham with a net 67. The triple tie in the opening day fourball bogey was also played, off, Mr and Mrs P. O'Shea winning. A Canadian foursome was played at Hussley on Saturday, the winners being H. F. Penlington and H. L. Blaniires with a card of 5 up. During the week-end the club played the second round of the Toss'will Cup with stroke handicaps. The best card among the seniors was from A. E. Ackroyd, net 66. V. R. J. Hean returned a net 68 to take the junior medal. At Avondale the J. Martin Cup, a

four-bait bogey, was played on Saturday. Cleland and W. M. Cleland won with a card of 6 up. On Simday the club played a Stableford competition. B. T. Martin winning with a score of 43. The Dunes, at which Miss J. C. Maccfonald sank her tee shot last week, "was again holed in one on Saturday by H. V. Sharp. A Stableford competition was played at Richmond Hill. D. C. Johnston won the senior event, with a total of 38. F. H. Hamilton led the juniors with a score of 37. At Templeton the first rounds of the knockout competitions were played. There was a tie in the bogey competition played at V/aimairi, B. C. Bradshaw and S. J. Russell coming in with cards of 4 up. Bradshaw won on the play-off. The Rawhiti-Club played stroke handicaps. C. W. Mullan won the senior division with a net 63 and /v. B. L. Smith the junior with a net 59. Playing at Charteris Bay, H. E. Ayers holed his tee shot at the ninth, 150 yards.
