j NOTES ON THE RACING [3I'IUI.IL TO THE ri'.BHSJ PALMERSTON NORTH, March 30. | Warm Favourite Beaten | Blondie, a warm .favourite for the Pohangina Handicap, headed the leader, Bolinda King, at the home turn and looked to have the race in safe keeping, but Storm Queen, driven by J. Bryce, junr., beat him to the post easily. When Storm Queen, rail past the favourite .she put a big break on the cream gelding, who skipped when asked for a final effort. Bolinda King was third, just in front of War Bird. An Outsider Producing the cx-Takanini and Canterbury trotter, Bell Heather, for the | iir.st time since purchasing her, W. Heginbolham scored a great victory in the Awapuni Handicap to return over a third of a century. Bell Heather was the only one of the 10 limit horses to go away correctly, and she opened up a break that was useful to her at the finish. Along the back Wrackless ran into second place from Worthy Princess, Native Tree, Margaret Parish, and Arapai, but Wrackless was the only one with a chance of catching the leader. Bell Heather hung on gamely to beat him a length, with Margaret Parrish four lengths back third. Then came Blue Blood, Waiknlo Prince, Native Tree, and Modern Lady. Audo Patch, the favourite, refused to go away, and was quickly at the tail of the field. A Stirring: Finish There was a stirring set to all the way up the straight in the Ladles' Bracelet between the favourite. Casino, and the little-fancied, Cassidy, a local production, C. S. Donald getting Casino home by a short neck. Great Vanity led from Homelcig'n Dillon for a little over a mile, where Cassidy and Supertax took charge with Casino and Derby Thorpe handy. Cassidy and Casino came away in the run home, to finish, as stated. Derby Thorpe was a moderate third, followed by Supertax and Harveslin. Rackatcer's Poor Display Rackateer, the warm fancy for the Manawatu Trotting Cup, struggled into third place after a poor display. He was never going happily on ihe grass track. Guymond early took the lead, while Nobleman from the back went up smartly to be handy at the end of half a mile. Entering the last round Guymond was showing the way to Gay Sister, Nobleman, Native Hero, and Lord Wrack, but at the home turn Nobleman was pulled out to challenge Guywood, and finishing strongly he won by a length. Rackateer cut Gay Sister out o£ third place, and then came Lady Author, Native Hero, and Lord Wrack. C. S. Donald's Double Mamaku, Dushka, and Great Vanity were the early leaders in the Longburn Handicap, but at the end of half a mile the favourite, Plutus, driven by C. S. Donald, joined them and the quartet made play across the top from Wrackless and Supertax, who were well clear of the others. Mamaku led round the turn from Plutus, but the favourite went on to win easily from Wrackless and Supertax, who just shaded Mamaku for third. Then came Trevor de Oro and Dushka. Waikato Prince in Form Waikato Prince won the McDonald Handicap in a jog. He was early in third place behind Bell Heather and Black Native, and when the leaders
broke at the end of a mile the Hamilton horse look charge and won as he liked. Captain Bolt, who led early and dropped back to fourth, finished well to cut Black Native out of j second money, followed by Aerial Boy and Modern Lady. Red Gold Disappoints Red Gold, favourite for the Dash Handicap, made a slow beginning and when going well crossing the top, broke up, to finish well back. Hemlock Hero and Orleigh Mills began best and at the end of half a mile Orleigh Mills shot to the front and won easily. Storm Queen, penalised 24 yards for her earlier win, was second, with War Bird third. Then came Janice and Harvestin. Sylvia Sydney Beaten Sylvia Sydney, the favourite for the President's Handicap, after being well back early, made a good final run, but was narrowly beaten by Edna Worthy, who was well driven by C, Moran. Gay Sister and Nelson's Chum put a big break 011 the field in the first half mile, but both stopped in the run home. Edna Worthy shot past them and held off the favourite, while Guymond beat Gay Sister for third place. Harold Logan, who tailed the field all the way, was accorded a fine reception. TO-DAY'S PROGRAMME
