YOUNG BIRD SHOW

A FINE DISPLAY CLUB'S NEW VENTURE Birds from all parts of Canterbury, from the West Coast, and from Nelson were exhibited at the first young bird show of the Christchurch Poultry, Pigeon, and Canary Club, which opened in the Central Mart, Cashel street, yesterday. The entries numbered 478, a greater number than any similar show in Christchurch has drawn, and the judges said they were surprised at the good quality of the birds generally. One of the most interesting features of the show was an entry of five Black Wyandottes—three cockerels and two pullets. Black Wyandottes are a new variety of fowl to Christchurch fanciers, and they attracted much attention. A Black Wyandotte, imported from England, was exhibited at a show held by the club two years ago, and the fowls in the present show are some of its stock. They are typical Wyandottes and \yhen they become better known it is considered that their breed will become popular. The outstanding fowls were the White Leghorns, both cockerels and pullets. Most of them were well developed ,and the winning birds were up to the best show quality. Some of the other fowls, especially the Wyandottes, were a little too young to show to the best advantage, as they do not develop their feathers unitl late. Considerable interest was taken in the Australorps, a fairly large class of even quality. Leading breeders said that the Australorps were beginning to find many admirers in Canterbury.

Most of the entries in the bantam sections were game birds and the ducks were practically confined to Khaki Campbells, among which were some excellent specimens. The canaries were good class all round and the champion birds were really outstanding. The best Yorkshire was a yellow variegated of good type and colour and the best Norwich was a fine buff variegated. Another good bird in the Norwich section was a clear yellow. Its colour and feather were of the best, but it was inclined to be too long. Budgerigars were forward in large numbers of greens, lemons, blues, silvers, and yellows. The best bird was a cobalt blue cock.

The fancy pigeons made a very fine show for this time of the year, their quality and general condition being much commented, on. The judges found it very hard to make awards. The best classes were among the tumblers, the red§ and whites comparing favourably with any seen at Christchurch shows. The kittens and rabbits will be judged to-day when the show will again be open. The judges were:—Open poultry and ducks, Mr P. Jack; Utility light breeds, Mr W. J. Chambers; utility heavy breeds, Mr F. H. Lovell; bantams, Mr G. King; fancy pigeons, Mr H. Wiltshire; homer pigeons, Mr F. Kingsford; canaries and cage birds, Mr T. H. Jones; Mrs A. J. Smith will judge the kittens, Mr A. W. McNickefrthe Angora and normal fur rabbits, and Mr G. Cowan, the Rex rabbits. The Results Results in the classes judged yesterday were:— Ol'EN T CLASS POULTKY OLD ENGLISH GAME Uiaek l-eil cockerel (4;: F. Williams i, \\. Williamson 2. Partridge pullet.
