OBITUARY

•MRS ROSE BUTTOLA (SPECIAL TO THE PRESS.I GREYMOUTH, March 15. The death occurred at her home at Poerua, Otira line, yesterday morning of Mrs Rose Buttola, a native of Donegal, Ireland. Mrs Buttola came to New Zealand ."0 years ago in the sailing ship Blue Jacket, was married in 1875, and went to Poerua in the same year, being one of the first white women to settle on the Otira line. She had resided at Poerua ever since. Her husband predeceased her 19 years ago. She is survived by one son, Peter, and :>ne daughter, Miss Rose Buttola, both of Poerua. MRS M. HARNETT The funeral of the late Mrs Matthew Barnelt, whose death occurred recently at Tai Tapu, took place on Wednesday afternoon at the Springston Cemetery. The large attendance testified to the high esteem in which Mrs Barnet.t was held. A short service was conducted by the Rev. M. Ayrton in the Tai Tapu Methodist Church, of which Mrs Barnett had been a member. Pall-bearers were Messrs W. Walls and C. Barnett (nephews) and E. Tobeck and H. Dulieu. The chief mourners were Mr M. Barnett (husband). Misses Nellie. Winnie, May, and Annie Barnett (daughters), Mr W. Barnett (son), and Mrs T. Barnett (sister*in-law). Floral tributes were received from the family, brother Andrew, Methodist Ladies' Guild, Sir R. Heaton Rhodes and Miss Hynes, Mr and Mrs T. O. KE!) CROSS SOCIETY I'M T.U'I lIKANCH The annual meeting of the Tai Tapu branch of the Red Cross Society was held in the Tai Tapu Hall on Thursday afternoon. Mrs R. McLaehlan presided over a good attendance of members, and the secretary (Miss A. Sharp) read the annual report and the balance-sheet, which were considered satisfactory. The following oflicers were re-elected:—-President. Mrs McLaehlan; honorary secretary. Miss A. Sharp: treasurer. Mrs Gilmour. A motion of sympathy was passed with the relatives of the late Mrs M. Barnett. members standing in silence. It was decided to work for (ho Red Cross central branch during the coming winter months, and a number of garments to be made up were distributed to members. Combined Meeting' Later, a combined meeting of Red Cross workers and Nurse Maude's well-wishers was held to consider ways and means of raising funds. At the annual meeting of Nurse Maude's helners it had been suggested that a fete should be held in Rhodes Park. It was decided that the branches should co-operate and hold the fete on Saturday, April G. Mrs R. M. Morten, president of Nurse Maude's branch, was proposed as president of Hie combined committee, but she declined in favour of Mrs McLaehlan, who was elected. Suggestions for popularising the fete were made and after appointing conveners for sweets, produce, cakes stalls, competitions and bran tub, it was decided to hold another meeting later. Miss Dean (secretary) and Miss A. Welsh (treasurer!, of Nurse Maude's branch, were appointed joint secretary and treasurer of the committee with Miss Sharp and Mrs Gilmour. Arrangements were also made to have a hand-in attendance at the fete. CHRISTCHURCH MUSICAL SOCIETY LADIES' AUXILIARY At. a meeting held recently, ladies of the choir of the Royal Christchurch Musical Society decided that their organisation should in future be known as the ladies' auxiliary. Officers elected were: President. Mrs A. G. Lake; vice-presidents, Mesdames Gallop and Wilson; secretary, Miss Gray; treasurer, Miss Queree. FREE KINDERGARTEN NORTH UN WOOD The monthly meeting of the North Linwood Free Kindergarten was held in the schoolroom. Present were Mrs Powell (convener), Mesdames Retallick (treasurer), Royfee (honorary secretary), Holloway, Grigg, and Mr Grigg. Miss Martin reported that the roll number was 70, and subscriptions had totalled £5 5s lOd. Messrs Grigg and Sorrell were appointed to the visiting committee for I the month.

COPPER TRAIL RACE Christchurch continues to maintain its lead in the Wellington-Christ-church Free Kindergarten copper trail race. The figures yesterday were:— Wellington, £167 10s; Christchurch. £230 3s Bd.
